OET Speaking is one of the easiest subtests if you know how to approach the tasks and lead the conversation. Remember, the conversation must be balanced which means you need to engage the patient and incorporate his/her perspectives.
Here, I posted a Speaking subtest sample for reference.
Dr: Hello, Good afternoon.
Pt: Good Afternoon Doctor.
Dr: My name is Dr Aditi and I am your attending physician today. How may I address you?
Pt: My name is Mr X.
Dr: Nice to meet you Mr X. So, how may I help you?
Pt: Doctor I have been experiencing this pain in the joints of my right toe. Yesterday it became red and very painful and swollen.
Dr: Hmm, this must have been a very difficult experience for you. Well, I would like to ask you few questions related to your symptoms for better understanding. Is that ok?
Pt: Sure Doctor.
Dr: How would you describe your pain?
Pt: It’s severe and burning.
Dr: Is it limited to your right toe or do you experience it somewhere else as well?
Pt: No, only in the right toe.
Dr: Have you tried taking anything to reduce the pain?
Pt: Ya Doctor. I took aspirin but it doesn’t seem to be working. And the pain is getting worse.
Doctor: Oh, I am sorry to hear that! And, did you experience such episodes in the past?
Pt: Ya. I have had two previous attacks. But this seems to be the worst.
Dr: Can I have a closer look at your toe?
Pt: Sure Doctor.
Dr Well Mr X, based on your history and examination, my diagnosis is Gout. Do you have anything idea what this means?
Pt: No Doctor. What is it? Why do I have this?
Dr: No problem, I’ll explain this to you. Well, Gout is a condition where there is a build-up of uric acid. Uric acid is a normal component of your urine, it’s a product of the breakdown of different protein in our body, High concentrations of uric acid can deposit in the joint and can lead to Gout. Am I clear to you?
Pt: Yes doc. So how can I relive the pain?
Dr: Firstly, you need to avoid aspirin as it worsens the condition. I will prescribe you other appropriate painkillers along with other medications like allopurinol which will prevent further attacks.
Pt: doc, how long is this attack going to last as I have a friend’s wedding to attend.
Dr: I am sorry to say that it might take several weeks to get better,
Pt: Several weeks? Oh my God. I really don’t understand why I am having another attack in the first place.
Dr: I can understand your situation Mr X. And, I would like to assure you that recurrent attacks are common and you don’t need to worry. With the medications I have prescribed, we can prevent further attacks, Sounds good?
Pt: I think so.
Dr: I would like to give you some advice about lifestyle changes that you need to follow. You need to reduce the intake of red meat and cut down on your alcohol intake. Also, losing some weight will be beneficial for you. Can you do this?
Pt: Yes doc, I think I can.
Dr: Anything else you would want to ask?
Pt: no doc. Thank you so much.
Dr It was nice meeting you, Mr X. I hope you get well soon.

ইদানিং অনেকে লিসেনিং মডিউলে খারাপ করছেন।
লিসেনিং এ খারাপ করার অন্যতম দুইটা কারন-
১) গুরুত্ব দিয়ে প্রিপারেশন না নেয়া। মানে এক দুইটা প্রাকটিসে ৩২/৩৪ মার্ক উঠলে ''আরেহ আমি পাস করবো'' চিন্তা করা।
২) পরীক্ষার দিন কোন কারনে ফুল কন্সেন্ট্রেশন না থাকা। সেটা সকালের নাস্তা স্কিপ করার কারনে হোক আর আগের রাতে না ঘুমানোর কারনে হোক।

লিসেনিং এ প্রাকটিস খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। যারা একেবারে নতুন শুরু করছেন কিন্তু পরীক্ষা মাত্র কয়েকমাস দূরে তারা শুরু থেকেই লিসেনিং প্রাক্সটিস করুন।
কিভাবে করবেন?
১) পার্ট করে প্রাকটিস করুন। যখন পার্ট এ করবেন তখন কয়েকদিন শুধু এই পার্টই করবেন। তখন আপনার উইকনেসগুলো বুঝতে সুবিধা হবে আর বেশি টায়ার্ড হবেন না।

২) যে প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর ভুল করবেন সেগুলোর অডিও বার বার শুনবেন। কেন ভুল হয়েছে বুঝার চেষ্টা করবেন। আপনি কি শব্দটা বুঝেননি না পুরো সেন্টেন্সের মিনিং বুঝেননি? যদি শব্দে সমস্যা হয় তাহলে গুগল করে এই শব্দের কয়েকটি প্রনানশিয়েশন শুনে নিবেন। ভুল থেকে না শিখলে পরীক্ষায় গিইয়ে দেখবেন এই শব্ধই আপনার কপালে।

৩) আপনার প্রাকটিসের উপর ভিত্তি করে পরীক্ষার আগেই আপনার ফিক্স করতে হবে কোন পার্টে আপনাকে কতো মার্ক টার্গেট করতে হবে। পার্ট এ-তে ১০০% মার্ক তোলার চেষ্টা করতে হবে। তখন মন ভালো থাকবে, বাকি পার্টে কনসেন্ট্রেশন ধরে রাখতে পারবেন। পার্ট বি তে ৮০% আর সি তে যতো বেশি পারা যায় কিন্তু এটলেস্ট ৫০% হলে ভাল।

৪) মনোযোগ প্রাক্টিস করতে হবে। লিসেনিং প্রাকটিস প্রথমে পার্ট পার্ট করে এবং পরে পুরো লিসেনিং একসাথে অনেকবার প্রাকটিস করতে হবে। খেয়াল রাখবেন কোন পর্যায়ে গিয়ে কনসেনট্রেশন চলে যায়। যেখানে যায় কেন যায়? সেটা ঠিক করতে হবে।

৫) একসেন্ট নিয়ে খুব বেশি চিন্তা করা যাবে না। লিসেনিং এ আপনার আনসার যে ওয়ার্ডে বা সেন্টেন্সে থাকবে বেশিরভাগ ক্ষেত্রেই সেটা বোধগম্য। বাকি পার্টে তারা নাটক করতে পারে।

৬) প্রেডিকশন করা শিখতে হবে। শুধুমার প্রশ্ন পড়েই অনেকক্ষেত্রে বোঝা যায় এর আনসার নাউন/ভার্ব/নাম্বার/এড্রেস এসবের মধ্যে কি হবে। এটা করতে পারলে এংজাইটি কমে যাবে।

৭) লিসেনিং এর মাঝে মাঝে অনেক গ্যাপ থাকে। এই গ্যাপ টাইমগুলো ইউজ করতে হবে প্রশ্ন পড়তে। গ্যাপ পাওয়ার সাথে সাথেই প্রশ্ন আর প্রশ্নের স্টেমগুলো পড়া শুরু করবেন। র‍্যাপিডলি পড়বেন , সময় থাকলে পরে আরেকবার পড়বেন।
৮) কোন প্রশ্ন মিস করলে সেটা নি হাহুতাশ করা যাবে না। এখন মাননীয় স্পীকার কোথায় আছেন সেখানে মন নিতে হবে এবং পরের প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর দিতে হবে। যেটা মিস হয়েছে সেটা গ্যাপের সময় কনটেক্সট বুঝে একটা ওয়ার্ড লিখে দিয়ে আসবেন।

৯) বানান নিয়ে, ক্যাপিটাল স্মল লেটার নিয়ে অত্যধিক চিন্তা করা যাবে না। লিসেনিং এ আপনার লিসেনিং ক্যাপাসিটি দেখা হয়। যা শুনেছেন সেটার বানানে একটু ভুলে মার্ক কাটবে না। কিন্তু Small কে যদি Ball লিখেন তাহলে তারা রাগ করে মার্ক কেটে দিবে!
