đ Exploring Bangladeshâs Coastlines and Deltas with a Global Expert!
We had the privilege of hosting the distinguished Professor Dr. Hermann-Rudolf Kudrass, a world-renowned marine geologist. He is the formerly of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), Germany and MARUM, University of Bremen.
During the seminar, he shared insights highly
to Bangladesh, including:
đ Tsunami deposits and sediment dynamics in the Bay of Bengal
đSea-level changes and climate impacts on our deltaic regions
âī¸ Geological evolution and heavy mineral accumulations of the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta
đŗRecent findings on earthquake-driven coastal subsidence in the Sundarbans since the 8th century, inferred from submerged kilns and mangrove remnants, highlighting how tectonic activity shapes our landscape.
His work is instrumental in helping us understand how Bangladeshâs coastline and river systems respond to natural and climatic changes. Listening to his perspectives today not only inspired us but also emphasized the importance of science for disaster preparedness, sustainable development and climate resilience in our country.

đ AAPGâSPEâEAGE Joint Fieldwork | Sylhet Region
From December 21â24, the AAPG, SPE and EAGE Student Chapters of the Department of Geology, University of Dhaka organized a fieldwork across Jaflong, Tamabil and Jaintiapur (Sylhet) under the guidance of Dr. Anowar Hossain Bhuiyan and Md. Sajjadul Islam Fahim.
đǍ Day 1: We examined the Kopili Shale and Sylhet Limestone. The limestone displayed a clear vertical progression from micritic limestone at the base, through fossiliferous limestone to upper sparitic (crystalline) limestone, reflecting changes in depositional conditions and diagenesis.
đĨī¸ Day 2: At Tetul Ghat, we studied the Bhuban Formationâa sandstone dominated sequence interbedded with shale, representing a shallow marine to deltaic depositional environment during a marine transgressive phase. We collected shale samples to better understand the Afifanagar deltaic sequence and the transition between shallow marine and deltaic deposits.
đǍ On the return walk, we observed the Bokabil Formation, notable for its heterolithic bedding with alternating sand and shale, indicating deltaic energy fluctuations and also briefly saw the Dupitila Formation, completing our Surma Group observations.
đ The Surma Group has major geological significance in Bangladesh. Its Miocene fluvio-deltaic to shallow marine sandstones and shales form the structural backbone of the eastern basin and host the majority of the countryâs natural gas reservoirs. In the Surma Basin alone, about 11 out of 28 discovered gas fields account for an estimated ~10.8 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of recoverable gas within the Bhuban and Bokabil formations, making it essential for national energy supply and petroleum exploration.

đOn 27 November, AAPG and SPE Dhaka University Student Chapters organized a collaborative Industrial visit at the Srikail-5, an appraisal-cum-development Well, Srikail Gas Field under the Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX). There joined two respected faculty members: Professor Dr. Md. Anowar Hossain Bhuiyan and Md. Sajjadul Islam Fahim, Lecturer from Department of Geology, University of Dhaka and 24 students including the coordinators from the Department of Meteorology, Oceanography and Disaster Science and Climate Resilience.
Srikail-5 has a directional drilling system with the target depth of about 3,450 metres. To ensure hands-on learning, students were divided into three mixed groups of 8 members each consisting of students from 2nd year to Masterâs level. The entire drilling operation was explained through five major systems:
đ¸ Hoisting System
đ¸ Rotary System
đ¸ Circulation System
đ¸ Power System
đ¸ Blowout Management
Each part was guided by specialized engineers who demonstrated the operational workflow in detail.
đĒThe experts taught the students how the hoisting system is responsible for lifting, lowering and suspending the drill string, casing and other heavy equipments. It provides the mechanical force needed to move drill pipes in and put of the drillbore. They also explained how the rotary table or top strive, drill string and drill bit works in rotary table and provides rotational force to cut through rock layers. There is a vital role player in this whole operation--drilling mud, which is pumped down the pipe through the bit and back to the surface. The power system supplies energy needed to operate all drilling rig components.
đ˛ Overall, the technical aspects were explored including:
âĸ Gas discovery process
âĸ Reservoir & human safety protocols
âĸ Downhole sensor measurements
âĸ Drill bit assembly, stabilizers, collars, jars, drill pipes, and MWD (Measurement While Drilling)
âĸ Inclined drilling techniques
âĸ Monitoring RPM, torque, ROP, hook load, WOB, stand-pipe pressure (SPP)
âĸ Gas chromatography (GC) and Total Gas (TG) analysis
âĸ DST (Drill Stem Test) for commercial viability of reservoirs
đThe hospitality and welcoming gestures of all the honourable managing bodies and staffs made this initiative a memorable one. This visit will be marked as an invaluable field experience, bridging classroom knowledge with real-world petroleum operations and deepening our understanding of Bangladeshâs subsurface energy resources.
