Two desk-rejects. One accept.
A researcher came to us in February after two desk-rejects on the same paper. Strong empirical work. Good methodology. Poor framing.
We did not touch the data or the analysis.
What we restructured:
✦ The abstract — contribution stated in the first sentence
✦ The introduction — gap argument made explicit in paragraph two
✦ The contribution section — separated from results, defended on its own terms
✦ The journal target — switched from generic outlet to ABS-3 specialist
The third journal accepted with minor revisions in nine weeks.
A paper that is 90% rigorous and 10% poorly framed is the same as a paper that is 100% poor.
The framing decides whether anyone reads the rest.

Why journals desk-reject before review.
80% of journal rejections happen before peer review.
Editors scan four things in 90 seconds:
✦ Scope fit — is this paper actually for this journal?
✦ Structure — IMRAD discipline followed?
✦ Citation depth — engaging with the right literature?
✦ Abstract precision — contribution clear in 250 words?
If any of those four fail, the paper is desk-rejected without comment.
Most authors believe their methodology decides acceptance. It does — but only if the paper survives 90 seconds first.

Minor corrections. First viva.
A PhD candidate at a UK Russell Group university came to us six months from submission. Methodology chapter was the weakest section. Supervisor had flagged it twice.
We rewrote that chapter four times before submission.
Critical realist framing properly anchored. Sampling logic defended with explicit criteria. Reflexive thematic analysis articulated with proper Braun & Clarke citations.
The viva committee opened with that exact section.
Minor corrections only.
A thesis is not finished when it is submitted. It is finished when it survives the viva.

Most theses fail at the viva.
Not the submission. Not the marking. The viva.
The viva is not a defence of what you wrote. It is a defence of why you wrote it.
Most candidates can describe their findings.
Few can defend their:
✦ Methodology (philosophy, sampling, analysis)
✦ Theoretical contribution
✦ Limitations and their handling
✦ Why you chose your approach over alternatives
3 layers examiners test.
90 minutes average viva.
1 strong defence to pass.
The chapter you build matters less than the chapter you can defend.

Twelve years of practice. One DBA.
A senior product manager came to us last year. CV strong. PhD applications already in motion.
We asked one question: do you want to publish or do you want to lead?
His answer was lead.
We redirected him to a DBA programme. Methodology rebuilt for practitioner contribution. Henley accepted within six weeks.
His words this month: "That question saved me three years of the wrong work."
The wrong programme costs years.

DBA or PhD? A quiet test of framing.
Most applicants confuse the two. Fewer understand which actually serves their career.
DBA — Doctorate of Business Administration:
→ Practitioner-focused doctorate
→ Prizes managerial relevance and applied contribution
→ Methodology often action research, case study, executive interviews
→ Built for 5+ years senior management
PhD — Doctor of Philosophy:
→ Academic doctorate
→ Demands theoretical originality
→ Methodology must sustain 3-4 years of work
→ Built for research-track careers
Apply for the wrong one and the proposal — however polished — is rejected on framing, not content.
DM "ROUTE" — save this for someone deciding.

Twenty-three weak refs. One rebuild.
A Newcastle MRes applicant came to us with conditional admission already on the table.
Her supervisor's note was specific: strengthen your bibliography or we cannot proceed.
Twenty-three weak sources had to go.
PenCraft rebuilt the bibliography in 48 hours:
✦ ABS-3 ranked journals for every theoretical claim
✦ Peer-reviewed empirical work, last 5 years
✦ Foundational anchors properly cited
✦ Harvard Cite Them Right throughout
Conditional offer cleared the next week.
Citations are not paperwork. They are the first signal of whether a candidate understands their field.
