A team of 24 students and two faculty members from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) visited the RNPL 1320MW Coal Fired Thermal Power Plant at Payra, Patuakhali, on September 12, 2026.

The educational visit was led by Dr. Md. Abdur Razzak, Professor of EEE and Director of the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) at IUB, and Dr. Kazi Naziba Tahsin, Lecturer of EEE. It provided students with practical exposure to large-scale power generation, power plant operation, electrical systems, and associated industrial infrastructure, strengthening the connection between classroom learning and real-world engineering practices.

It was an important experiential learning opportunity for the participating students and complemented their academic studies with practical industrial exposure. Such initiatives are expected to enhance students’ technical knowledge, professional awareness, and understanding of career opportunities in the power and energy sector.

The EEE Department expressed its appreciation to RNPL and the plant management team and the section engineers, for their warm hospitality, technical briefings, and support in making the educational visit informative and meaningful.

The industrial tour was organized by the Department of EEE, IUB, in collaboration with the IEEE IUB Student Branch, IEEE IAS IUB Student Branch Chapter and IEEE PES IUB Student Branch Chapter.

🏎️⚡ IUB FormulaE Steals the Spotlight at Bangladesh Innovation Fair 2026!

Innovation built at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) — now turning heads on the national stage!

A proud moment for IUB as IUB FormulaE emerged as one of the major attractions at the Bangladesh Innovation Fair 2026, capturing the attention of the Honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Mr. Tarique Rahman, during his visit to the fair.

🏎️ Proudly funded by the Department of EEE, IUB, IUB FormulaE embodies the Department’s vision of taking engineering education beyond the classroom — into research, innovation and real-world technology development.

Developed by students and researchers of the EEE Department under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Khosru Mohammad Salim and led by IUB alumnus and post-graduate researcher Mr. Imtiaz Abedin, the project’s strong presence at the fair put a national spotlight on IUB’s contributions to engineering research, electric mobility and homegrown technological innovation.

And the stage could hardly have been bigger. 🚀

With 1,000+ innovations, 73 public and private universities, research organizations, startups, entrepreneurs and industry participants coming together under one roof, IUB FormulaE proudly carried the flag of IUB engineering innovation among some of Bangladesh’s brightest ideas and innovators. Among more than a thousand submissions, the IUB FormulaE project titled "Low-Cost Electric Powertrain" was selected among the Top 50 Innovators.

This is more than a FormulaE project. It is a demonstration of what happens when young engineering talent, academic research, institutional support and the courage to innovate come together.

⚡ ENGINEERED AT IUB.

An IUB team comprised entirely of students from the Department of EEE, IUB were crowned Champion at the 5th IEEE BECITHCON 2026!

A wonderful achievement for Independent University, Bangladesh as a team of talented students from the EEE Department emerged as the Champion of the Project Competition segment at the 5th IEEE BECITHCON 2026 conference, organized by IUBAT.

The team secured the championship with their innovative humanitarian project, “IoT-Based Gas Leakage Detection & Safety System,” developed to minimize the risk of gas-leakage-related accidents and enhance safety in residential and kitchen environments.

🔹 The Humanitarian Project

Humanitarian projects focus on applying engineering knowledge, technology, and innovation to solve real-life problems and improve people's safety, well-being, and quality of life. The IUB team's project reflects this vision by transforming IoT technology into a practical safety solution with real-world impact.

🔹 IoT-Based Gas Leakage Detection & Safety System

The system is designed to provide an immediate and automated response when a gas leak is detected:

🚨 Instant Alarm: Activates an alarm to alert people nearby.
⚡ Automatic Power Cut-Off: Disconnects electrical power to reduce the risk of sparks and fire.
🍳 Essential Kitchen Power: Keeps necessary kitchen power active for essential operations.
💨 Exhaust Ventilation: Keeps the exhaust fan starter operational to help remove accumulated gas.
📱 IoT Mobile Notification: Sends notifications through a mobile application, allowing users to receive alerts about gas leakage from virtually anywhere in the world.

Through this project, the team demonstrated how IoT, automation, and electrical engineering can be combined to address critical safety concerns and develop technology that can potentially protect lives.

👥 Meet the Champion Team (Team Infinity) from Department of EEE, IUB:

🔹 Rakib Kazi
Vice Chair, IEEE IUB Photonics Society

🔹 Shoyeb Hasan
General Member,IEEE IUB Student Branch

🔹 Irtifa Taskin
Ex SubCom Member, IEEE IUB Student Branch

🔹 Tasnim Jahan Prova
Secretary, IEEE IUB WIE Affinity Group

The achievement is a testament to the team's dedication, creativity, technical expertise, and strong spirit of teamwork. Their success highlights the potential of student-led engineering projects to create meaningful solutions for society.

Tazrian Noor, a graduate and former Research Engineer in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), has secured a fully funded PhD position in Applied Science and Technology at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (N.C. A&T), USA.

He left for the USA on August 12, 2026, and starting this Fall, he will begin his doctoral study focusing on near-field optical spectroscopy tools for the characterization of conventional and emerging semiconductor materials.

Tazrian began his undergraduate studies at IUB in Spring 2020 with a 100% merit scholarship and graduated in 2023 with a CGPA of 3.67. He received the Cum Laude distinction at IUB’s 25th Convocation and was included on several of the university’s academic honor and merit lists during his undergraduate studies.

Getting a fully funded PhD offer in USA straight after a bachelor's degree is unusual, as most international applicants first earn a master's degree to build the research record such positions demand. As an undergraduate student, Noor joined the IUB Photonics Simulation Laboratory (IUBPSL), a research group under the Department of EEE supervised by Prof. Dr. Mustafa Habib Chowdhury, Head of the Department of EEE, IUB.

Tazrian’s research at IUBPSL focused on computational photonics, optoelectronic device modeling, nanophotonics, and semiconductor technologies. During his time at IUBPSL, Tazrian co-authored two research articles published in Scopus-ranked Q1 journals and contributed to eight peer-reviewed IEEE conference publications, serving as lead author in three. A conference paper he co-authored under an IUB-sponsored research grant received the Best Paper Award in the Poster Paper Presentation category at the 2025 IEEE International Conference on Quantum Photonics, Artificial Intelligence, and Networking (QPAIN).

“Tazrian’s sustained involvement in research at IUBPSL allowed him to develop the technical and research skills required for advanced study in photonics and semiconductor technologies. His transition to a funded doctoral program reflects the foundation he built through his academic and research work at IUB,” said Prof. Chowdhury.
