𝐒𝐀𝐓 𝐢𝐬 "𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥"… 𝐬𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐩 𝐢𝐭, 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭? 🤔
Wrong. And here's why that mindset could cost you your dream university.
For years, students believed test-optional meant test-unnecessary. That era is officially over.
Universities like Harvard, Yale, MIT, Dartmouth, Stanford, and Brown have all reinstated standardized testing requirements for the 2024–25 admissions cycle and beyond. And they're not alone — over 1,800 universities across the US now require or strongly recommend SAT/ACT scores.
But here's what most students don't understand: even at schools that are still "test-optional," more than 80% of admitted students submit SAT scores anyway. That means if you don't submit, you're already at a disadvantage compared to the majority of the applicant pool.
Let's also clear up the confusion around testing policies, because not all "optional" means the same thing:
🔹 Test Required — You must submit an SAT or ACT score. No exceptions. (Harvard, MIT, Yale, Dartmouth, Caltech, Georgetown, and many more fall here now.)
🔹 Test Blind — The university won't look at your score even if you send it. Very few schools follow this policy. (Example: University of California system.)
🔹 Test Optional — You can choose whether to submit. But here's the catch: a strong score absolutely strengthens your application. Admissions officers have confirmed this repeatedly. Choosing not to submit when you could have submitted a competitive score raises questions.
So should YOU take the SAT?
If you're applying to any competitive university in the US, the answer is almost always yes. A strong SAT score is one of the most efficient ways to stand out — especially as an international applicant from Bangladesh, where GPA systems and school reputations vary widely in the eyes of US admissions officers. Your SAT score is the one universal metric they can compare directly.
Don't let one school's "optional" label make the decision for you. Look at your entire college list, evaluate the policies, and prepare accordingly.
Your profile might be strong. Your extracurriculars might be impressive. But a 1500+ SAT score? That's the proof that ties it all together.
