Every discipline has its own form of poetry and on Wednesday sport proved that its verses are written in physics. 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯 has started a new chapter 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗮𝗴𝗮 𝟮.𝟬 with its first session 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘀.

Every curling free-kick that bends past the wall, every conventional swing that hoops in through the air, every reverse swing that defies a batter's instinct has a story of forces, angles and momentum behind it. We used the session to unpick that story – realised that champions are made not just on the pitch, but in the equations behind.

The session was conducted by 𝗠𝗱. 𝗡𝗮𝗷𝗶𝗯 𝗠𝗮𝗵𝗺𝘂𝗱, Library Secretary, NDSC who offered a compelling perspective on how the principles of physics quietly shape the making of a champion.

"What if a fish rewired itself to become a living power plant?

𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝗲𝗹 (𝗘𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘂𝘀 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘂𝘀) Deep in the murky rivers of the Amazon, the 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗲𝗲𝗹 can release a jolt of about 𝟴𝟲𝟬 𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘁𝘀 in one shot — powerful enough to stun a horse. Nearly 𝟴𝟬 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁 of its body is taken up by specialized electric organs, packed with thousands of tiny cells called 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗰𝘆𝘁𝗲𝘀, which fire in perfect synchrony, like batteries wired in series.
Scientists have taken notice — building 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗰𝘆𝘁𝗲 𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗹𝘀 that mimic this very mechanism to generate clean electricity from little more than saltwater and gel.

What does a single sheet of carbon do to materials science?
In 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟒, physicists 𝐀𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐞 𝐆𝐞𝐢𝐦 and 𝐊𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐨𝐯𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐯 were able to isolate 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐞, a honeycomb-structured carbon lattice that is just one atom thick, and heralded the first real two-dimensional material. They shared the 𝐍𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐏𝐡𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐜𝐬 in 2010.
Graphene has roughly 𝟐𝟎𝟎 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐥, better conductivity than copper, and is nearly transparent — yet it allows very little to pass thru it. Scientists are calling it the closest thing to a “𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐥 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥" ever found.

In 1928, a Petri dish in his lab was accidentally contaminated. This wasn’t just a mistake; it led to the discovery of 𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻, the first true antibiotic, an invention that changed the course of modern medicine forever. For great scientific discoveries do not necessarily depend upon meticulous planning; they depend upon a keen and alert mind to see an opportunity. This time, the 𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗿𝗲 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝘂𝗯 is celebrating the birthday of the amazing mind that was curious enough to save millions of lives all over the world through precise observations.

What happens to information when it falls into a 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐞?
This question is at the core of one of the longest-standing unsolved puzzles in physics. 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲 says that anything that crosses a black hole’s 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐨𝐧 is forever cut off from the universe. 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐦 𝐦𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐬, however, insists that information can never be destroyed, only rendered incomprehensible.
In 1974, 𝐇𝐚𝐰𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 proved that black holes slowly 𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 through radiation – but that 𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 seemed to contain no sign of the matter that fell in, leading to the question of whether that information is lost forever.
