"I sold my car and started working night shifts to cover my daughter's tuition β€” the call from the Dean's office just days before her graduation left me utterly speechless.

My husband left when Jane was five.

There wasn’t a heated argument. No advance warning. Just a quiet chat at the kitchen table and a suitcase by the door the following morning.

From then on, it was just the two of us.

I was employed during the day at a small office and then took up night shifts wherever possible β€” cleaning, stocking shelves, anything that brought in money. I convinced myself it would be temporary. That things would eventually improve.

They didn’t.

But Jane grew up nonetheless.

Bright. Driven. The type of child who effortlessly completed her homework without needing a reminder. The kind who expressed gratitude for things I knew she merited without having to be prompted.

When she received her college acceptance, I distinctly remember smiling and saying, ""We'll figure it out.""

What I failed to mention was that I had no clue how.

So, I sold my car.

Began taking the bus. Then walked when necessary.

And I turned to more night shifts.

Some weeks, I hardly got any sleep. I would return home just in time to shower and then head back out again.

Jane never complained. Not even once.

She just kept pushing through. Classes, a part-time job, late-night study sessions.

Whenever I felt overwhelmed, I would remind myself β€” this was the purpose. This was what everything was for.

Her future.

Four years flew by in that manner.

And suddenly, we found ourselves just days away from her graduation.

I recall sitting at the kitchen table, reviewing bills, attempting to determine how I could manage one more payment.

That’s when my phone began to ring.

An unknown number.

I nearly didn’t answer.

But something urged me to do so.

""Hello?""

There was a brief silence.

Then a voice on the other end said,

""Is this Jane’s mother? This is the Dean's office. It’s urgent. It concerns your daughter, Jane.""

For a moment, I was at a loss for words.

""W-What happened?"" I asked, terrified. ⬇️"
