Eastern University won the ATN Bangla Shadow Parliament Debate Competition, organized by Debate for Democracy. The team, consisting of Fatema Tuj Johura, Tanvir Ahmed, Kaniz Fatema Ritu, Najmul Islam Roton, and Abu Nasir Al Rakib, defeated Bangladesh University in a thrilling contest. The event was attended by Advocate Mohammad Asaduzzaman, Honorable Attorney General, and presided over by Debate for Democracy President Hasan Ahmed Kiran. The ceremony also featured Registrar Dr. Abul Basher Khan, Debating Club Coordinator Moumita Rahman Eipsh*ta, and Deputy Director of Student Affairs Mr. K.M. Monirul Islam.

Bangladeshi students studying in the United States have reached an all-time high, with over 17,000 currently enrolled in US institutions. This growth represents a 26% increase from the previous academic year (2022-2023), according to the 2024 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange. The number of Bangladeshi students in the United States has grown by over 250% over the past decade, from 4,802 in the 2013-2014 academic year to 17,099 in 2023-2024. The US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the Institute of International Education jointly release the annual Open Doors Report, which records the number of international students at US universities and international students enrolled in pre-academic intensive English programs.

In 2023, international students contributed over $50 billion to the United States and more than 368,000 jobs, according to the US Department of Commerce. The US Embassy in Dhaka is celebrating International Education Week 2024 by offering virtual and in-person information sessions and conducting regional outreach sessions for Bangladeshi students and scholars about the US higher education application process, different types of academic programs, funding/scholarship opportunities, and US government-sponsored academic and professional exchange programs. ওয়েবসাইটের লিংকের মাধ্যমে ভুয়া তথ্য ও গুজব ছড়ানো ঠেকাতে নেওয়া এ উদ্যোগের আওতায় ফিনিক্স সাইকেল ভর্তি যত্ন, কিউইডি-প্রাইভেট বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ভর্তি যত্ন বা অপরিচিত যেকোনো ব্যক্তির পাঠানো ওয়েবসাইটের লিংক বা সংবাদের সত্যতা হোয়াটসঅ্যাপ থেকেই যাচাই করা যাবে। ফলে ভুয়া তথ্য ছড়ানো ব্যক্তিদের সম্পর্কে আগে থেকেই সতর্ক থাকা যাবে। সার্চ অন ওয়েব নামের নতুন এ সুবিধা এরই মধ্যে হোয়াটসঅ্যাপের অ্যান্ড্রয়েড ২.২৪.২০.২৮ বেটা সংস্করণে যুক্ত করা হয়েছে। নির্দিষ্ট ব্যবহারকারীদের মতামত নিয়ে শিগগিরই সুবিধাটি সবার জন্য উন্মুক্ত করা হতে পারে।

অস্ট্রিয়ায় পড়াশোনা ও জীবনযাত্রার খরচ: ইউরোপীয় দেশটির সরকারি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলোতে বিদেশি শিক্ষার্থীদের গড়পড়তায় প্রতিবছর খরচ করতে হয় ১ হাজার ৪৫২ ইউরো। ইউনিভার্সিটি অব অ্যাপ্লায়েড সায়েন্সে প্রতি সেমিস্টারে ব্যয় হতে পারে ৭২৭ থেকে ৭ হাজার ৫০০ ইউরো। আর বেসরকারি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলোর বার্ষিক টিউশন ফি সাধারণত ৩ হাজার থেকে ২৩ হাজার ইউরো। কিছু ব্যবসায়িক প্রোগ্রামের জন্য অবশ্য এই অঙ্ক ৩৫ হাজার ইউরো পর্যন্ত হতে পারে। জীবনযাত্রার খরচ হিসেবে অস্ট্রিয়ার ভিয়েনা ও সাল্জবার্গের মতো শহরে থাকার জন্য মাসিক বাজেট রাখতে হবে ৯০০ থেকে ১ হাজার ৩০০ ইউরো। এর মধ্যে আবাসন, খাবার, সামাজিক ক্রিয়াকলাপ, পাবলিক ট্রান্সপোর্টসহ সব খরচ অন্তর্ভুক্ত। লিঞ্জ বা গ্রাজের মতো শহরগুলোতে খরচ হতে পারে প্রতি মাসে ৯০০ থেকে ১ হাজার ইউরো।

ইস্টার্ন ইউনিভার্সিটির উপাচার্য অধ্যাপক ড. সহিদ আকতার হুসাইন বলেন, পিএইচডির মূল্যায়ন কঠোরভাবে করতে হবে। ঢালাওভাবে পিএইচডি না দিয়ে নির্দিষ্ট প্রোগ্রামে দেওয়া উচিত। যে পিএইচডি করবে, তার এটা কোন কাজে লাগবে— সেটাও দেখতে হবে।

"State University inspires their students to consider government jobs, especially for the BCS exam, by facilitating sessions with experts. Additionally, we took the initiative to invite CEOs of corporations and HR heads to our campus for a series of programs. This allows them to learn about the capabilities of our students, and our students can learn from them how to tackle interview boards and understand other job qualifications. The University Grants Commission (UGC) is planning to allow private universities to introduce PhD programs after much debate. A committee has been formed to draft a policy to facilitate this initiative. Currently, only 56 approved public universities in Bangladesh offer PhD programs, while none of the 114 private universities are permitted to offer the degree. Private university authorities have been spending a lot in the research sector, with 84 of them allocating an average of Tk 1.53 crore of their budget only for research. The UGC has formed a six-member committee to produce a draft policy on introducing PhD programs at private universities.
