The Department of English and Modern Languages, IUB, is pleased to share a recent scholarly contribution in the BRAC University Journal by Professor PhD, Independent University, Bangladesh.

Dr. Ahmed Ahsanuzzaman has authored a research article titled
The study provides a nuanced examination of memory, identity, and belonging through the oral testimonies of Partition survivors who migrated from West Bengal to present-day Bangladesh.

๐€๐›๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ญ
This paper examines the complex negotiation of displaced identities as revealed through the memoirs and oral testimonies of four Partition survivors who migrated from various regions of West Bengal, India, and resettled in the Khulna division of erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) between 1946 and the late 1960s. The testimonials were collected through on-site interviews conducted in Jhenidah, Kushtia, Meherpur, and Chuadanga during 2017โ€“2018 as part of the collaborative research project โ€œMapping Partition Memory, Amnesia and Literature in Middle and Southern Bengal: An Indo-Bangladesh Perspective.โ€

Drawing on memory studies and refugee narratives, the article demonstrates that displacement is not confined to the historical moment of migration but continues to reverberate through everyday life, kinship relations, language, and affect. Memory emerges not as a passive archive but as an active process that reconstructs identity, mediates trauma, and negotiates belonging. The study identifies three key findings: displacement as an embodied and sensory experience; memory as shaped by political and historical pressures; and belonging as a gradual, negotiated process embedded within community and social integration. The paper argues that the Partition of Bengal remains an ongoing lived reality that continues to shape the formation of home and identity for Muslim refugees in post-Partition Bangladesh.
