LIFTOFF! Humanity Returns to the Lunar Vicinity

​CAPE CANAVERAL, FL-In a brilliant streak of light that mirrored the dawn of a new era, NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket roared to life yesterday, April 1, 2026, at 6:35 p.m. EDT. Carrying four astronauts aboard the Orion spacecraft, the Artemis II mission successfully cleared Launch Complex 39B, marking the first time humans have departed Earth’s orbit for the Moon in over 50 years.
​The Mission Profile
​The 10-day flight is a rigorous "systems validation" mission. Unlike the Apollo missions of the past, Artemis II is testing the modern infrastructure required for a permanent human presence on the lunar surface.

•​Current Status: Orion is currently in a high Earth orbit. The crew spent their first few hours ensuring the Solar Array Wings (SAWs) deployed correctly—critical for powering the life-support systems now keeping them alive in the vacuum of space.

​•The Trajectory: Today, the crew will perform a "proximity operations" demonstration, manually piloting Orion to test its handling. Tomorrow, they will ignite the service module’s main engine for the Trans-Lunar Injection (TLI), a maneuver that will slingshot them toward the Moon.

•​The Flyby: The spacecraft will loop around the far side of the Moon, reaching a point roughly 4,600 miles beyond it—further than any human has ever traveled—before using lunar gravity to "free-return" back to Earth.

​A Crew of Firsts
​The four-person crew represents a deliberate shift toward international collaboration and diversity in deep-space exploration:
•​Commander Reid Wiseman (NASA): A veteran naval aviator leading the mission.
​•Pilot Victor Glover (NASA): The first person of color to leave low Earth orbit.
•​Mission Specialist Christina Koch (NASA): The first woman to embark on a lunar mission.
​•Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen (CSA): The first non-U.S. citizen (Canadian) to fly to the Moon.
​Why It Matters
​While Artemis II will not land on the surface, it is the final "live-fire" test before Artemis III, which aims to land the first woman and next man near the lunar South Pole in 2028.
​As NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman noted shortly after liftoff, "This isn't just about a visit; it's about staying." The data gathered over the next nine days regarding radiation shielding, communication delays, and carbon dioxide scrubbing will be the blueprint for the planned Moon Base and future missions to Mars.
