ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অনাবাসিক শিক্ষার্থীদের কথা মাথায় রেখে ঢাকা ও আশপাশে ১৭টা রুটে ঢাবির লাল বাস চলাচল করে। তবে এগুলো সারাদিন চলে না এর যাওয়া-আসার নির্দিষ্ট টাইম টেবিল আছে। আবার এই ঢাকা ও আশপাশের জেলায় যেসব জায়গায় বাস যায় সেখানকার ছাত্র-ছাত্রীদের হলে সিট দেওয়া হয় না বলে শুনেছি।

রাস্তার ধারে সিঙ্গাড়া, সমুচা বিক্রেতা হিসেবে আমার ছোট্ট মহল্লায় আমিন ভাইয়ের সুনাম কিংবদন্তিতুল্য। একদিন জিহ্বার তাড়নায় আমি তার ক্ষুদ্র বিপণীটায় গিয়ে তাকে পেলাম না। লোক মারফত জানতে পারলাম তার স্ত্রীর প্রসববেদনা ওঠায় তিনি দোকান বন্ধ করে কিছুক্ষণ আগে চলে গেছেন। বুঝলাম, পরিবারে নতুন সদস্যের আগমন উপলক্ষে তার একমাত্র রুটিরুজির চরকা কিছুদিন ঘুরবে না।

আমিন ভাইয়ের মতো আরো একজন কিংবদন্তিতুল্য ব্যবসায়ী ছিলেন মহল্লায়। নাম ছিল তার আকরাম; কেউ ডাকতো আকরাম ভাই, আবার আমার মতো কেউ কেউ ডাকতো আকরাম চাচা বলে। তিনি ভ্যানগাড়িতে করে আনারসের পসরা সাজিয়ে বসতেন। তার সাজিয়ে রাখা আনারসগুলোতে মেছতার মতো যে দাগ ফুঁটে থাকতো, তাতে করে সেগুলো মর্যাদা পেত বাজারের প্রথম শ্রেণির আনারস হিসেবে। জাগতিক নিয়মে আকরাম চাঁচা আর নেই। বড় ছেলে হাল ধরে তার আনারসের কারবার নিভু নিভু করে জ্বালিয়ে রেখেছে বর্তমানে।

ইদানিং ভিক্ষাবৃত্তির উপদ্রব বেড়ে যাওয়া সত্বেও নাসিমা নামের একটা কিশোরী মেয়েকে ভিখারিনীর ভূমিকায় দেখতে আমার কাছে খুবই দৃষ্টিকটু লাগে। মা নেই ওর; খুব সম্ভবত বাবাও। তাই যেই বয়সটা ছিল ওর গোল্লাছুট, কানামাছি, দাড়িয়াবান্ধা খেলার, সে বয়সে মেয়েটা এর ওর থেকে খুচরো টাকা জড়ো করে নিজের ওড়নায় গিঁট দিয়ে বেঁধে রেখে জীবন চালিয়ে নিচ্ছে। তাছাড়া নাসিমাদের সংখ্যা বৃদ্ধির ব্যাপারটাও সামষ্টিকভাবে আমাদের অধঃপতনকে ইঙ্গিত করে।

যেহেতু চাইলেই চোখ বন্ধ করে রাখা যায় না, কাজেই কাছাকাছি থাকা এমন শ্রেণিহীন এবং নিম্ন-মধ্যবিত্ত শ্রেণির মানুষদের প্রতিনিয়ত দেখতে হয় নানা কায়দায় বেঁচে থাকতে। দেখতে হয় বহুদিন আগে কেনা জামা, শার্ট, লুঙ্গি, স্যান্ডেলের ফিতা জোড়াতালি দিয়ে দিয়ে তারা কীরকম টিকে রয়েছে। কোনোদিন অবস্থার উন্নতি হবে ভেবে, ভদ্রলোকদের যে সমাজে তাদের বাস, ঐ সমাজে এমন সীমাবদ্ধ জীবের মতো বেঁচে থাকতে তাদের ঠিক কেমন লাগে ভাবনায় কুলোয় না।

বুঝি তাই, জীবনের দুঃসহ রীতিই এমন। কখনো কখনো জীবনধারণ‌ও হয়ে যায় কেমন যেন অশোভন।

History and Background

 The Department of Management Information Systems (MIS) at the University of Dhaka was officially established in 2004 under the Faculty of Business Studies.

 The origin of the department dates back to 1999, when the Department of Management prepared a concept paper highlighting the growing importance of information and communication technology (ICT) in business processes. As businesses around the world began relying more on digital systems and data, the need for a discipline that connects business knowledge with technology became increasingly clear. After a thorough review, the proposal received a positive recommendation from the Faculty of Business Studies and was forwarded to the university authority for approval. The University of Dhaka officially approved the establishment of the department in late 2004.

 The department was founded with the vision of bridging business, technology, and data analytics, enabling students to understand how organizations use information systems to support decision-making, manage data, and improve business performance.

 The department formally began its academic activities shortly afterward, and Professor Dr. Abdul Mannan Choudhury was appointed as the first Chairman on April 12, 2005.

 Over the years, the department expanded its academic programs and currently offers BBA, MBA, EMBA, MPhil, and PhD programs.

 Today, MIS stands as one of the most technology-oriented disciplines in the Faculty of Business Studies, preparing students for the digital future of business.

The Department of Accounting, formally known as department of Accounting & Information Systems (AIS) at University of Dhaka is one of the most prestigious accounting departments in Bangladesh. It belongs to the Faculty of Business Studies, University of Dhaka and has played a major role in developing professional accountants, corporate leaders, and academics in the country.
📚 History of the Department of Accounting
1️⃣ Early Beginning (1921–1970)
The University of Dhaka was established in 1921.
In the early years, commerce and accounting subjects were taught under the Faculty of Arts, not as a separate department.
Accounting education mainly focused on basic bookkeeping, auditing, and commercial practice.
2️⃣ Establishment of Commerce Faculty
In 1970, the Faculty of Commerce was established at Dhaka University.
Accounting then became a separate academic discipline, and the Department of Accounting formally started its journey.
The department introduced B.Com (Honours) and M.Com programs.
3️⃣ Expansion and Modernization
Over time, accounting education expanded to include:
Auditing
Taxation
Management Accounting
Financial Accounting
Accounting Information Systems
4️⃣ Renaming and Technological Focus
In 2009, the department was renamed Department of Accounting & Information Systems (AIS).
The new name reflects the integration of technology, information systems, and digital accounting practices in modern business.
5️⃣ Present Status
Today the department:
Offers BBA, MBA, MPhil, and PhD programs.
Produces graduates who work in:
Chartered Accountancy firms
Multinational companies
Banks and financial institutions
Government organizations
International organizations
Many AIS graduates also pursue professional qualifications such as:
Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (CA)
Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)

★History of Marketing Department.

The Department of Marketing at the University of Dhaka was officially founded on July 1, 1974. It was established as one of the four original departments under the then Faculty of Commerce, which has since been renamed the Faculty of Business Studies.

★Key Historical Milestones-

* 1970 (Foundation Roots): While the Faculty of Commerce was created in 1970, it initially launched with only the Departments of Management and Accounting. Plans for a Marketing department were part of the original 1970 blueprint but were delayed until 1974.
* 1974 (Establishment): The department began its journey with just 3 faculty members and 49 students. Professor Dr. Abdullah Farouk served as the founder chairman (1974–1976).
* 1977–1978: The faculty introduced the semester system to modernize its academic structure.
* 1994–1995: Academic degrees were rebranded; the B.Com. (Hons.) became the 4-year BBA, and the M.Com. was renamed the MBA.
* 1995: The parent faculty was officially renamed from the Faculty of Commerce to the Faculty of Business Studies.
* 2024 (Golden Jubilee): The department celebrated its 50th anniversary with weeklong festivities from December 7–13, 2024.

★Current Status and Programs-

Today, the department has grown into a major academic hub with over 1,500 students and 48 faculty members. It offers several specialized programs designed to meet global business standards.
* BBA & MBA: Core academic programs focused on interactive learning and modern marketing strategies.
* Master of Professional Marketing (MPM): A 51-credit hour program for professionals, including collaboration with the Directorate of National Consumer Right Protection for consumer law education.
* MBA (Evening): Designed for working executives to enhance their marketing expertise.
