The Nun’s Priest’s Tale is one of the stories in The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. It is a funny and meaningful story about a rooster named Chanticleer and a fox.

The story takes place in a poor widow’s farm. She lives a simple but peaceful life with her animals, including a beautiful rooster named Chanticleer. He is very proud of his voice and looks, and he has many hens. His favorite is Pertelote.

One day, Chanticleer has a bad dream about a strange animal trying to kill him. He becomes afraid and tells Pertelote. But she laughs at him and says dreams are meaningless. She advises him to be brave and not believe in dreams.

Later, while Chanticleer is walking in the yard, a fox appears. The fox is very clever and flatters Chanticleer by praising his beautiful voice. He asks Chanticleer to sing like his father did.

Chanticleer closes his eyes and starts to sing loudly. At that moment, the fox quickly grabs him and runs away. Everyone starts chasing the fox.

Summary of The Prologue to The Canterbury Tales

The General Prologue of The Canterbury Tales begins in spring, when the weather becomes warm and flowers start to bloom. People feel happy and want to go on journeys. During this time, a group of 29 pilgrims meet at the Tabard Inn in Southwark, London. They are going to visit the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket in Canterbury.

The narrator (Chaucer himself) joins them and describes each person in detail. These pilgrims come from different social classes, such as a Knight, a Squire, a Nun, a Monk, a Friar, a Merchant, a Doctor, a Wife of Bath, and many others. Through their descriptions, Chaucer shows the condition of society in medieval England. Some characters are honest and kind, while others are greedy, selfish, or corrupt.

The host of the inn, Harry Bailley, suggests a storytelling contest to make the journey more enjoyable. Each pilgrim will tell two stories on the way from London to Canterbury and two on the way back. The person who tells the best story will get a free dinner at the inn.
