A number of students of the School of Law, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) conducted a survey on use of polythene in the market under the direction and supervision of Professor Dr Abdul Awal Khan. The purpose of the survey was to evaluate the level of public awareness and market perspectives on the use of polythene bags considering the legal restrictions imposed by the government in November 2024. The survey was conducted by the 36 students of the course “Environmental Law of Bangladesh’, and they interviewed retailers in 36 different markets and locations of Dhaka city where single-use polytene was frequently used.
Key Findings of the survey were as follows
40% of the people surveyed were unaware of the law regarding the ban on polythene bags even though they were unaware of further restrictions imposed by the government in November 2024.
Most of the survey participants mentioned that the government did not take sufficient measures to create public awareness about the negative impacts of polythene use and adequate measures for proper implementation of the law.
90% of the retailers expressed that various alternative methods or solutions to be provided by the government for replacing polythene bags.
