শহীদ সেনা দিবসে
সকল শহীদের প্রতি বিনম্র শ্রদ্ধা।।

যদিও সাধারণভাবে নামবাচক বিশেষ্যের ভাষান্তর করা হয় না, তবুও মেট্রোরেলের ইংরেজি ধারাবিবরণীতে বিদেশি যাত্রীদের সুবিধার কথা ভেবে সচিবালয়, ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়, উত্তরা দক্ষিণ ও উত্তরা উত্তর স্টেশনের নাম ইংরেজিতে অনুবাদ করে বলা হয়।

কিন্তু মজার ব্যাপার হলো, বাংলা ধারাবিবরণীতে শুধুমাত্র উত্তরা সেন্টার স্টেশন–কে “উত্তরা সেন্টার” বলেই রাখা হয়েছে, বাংলায় অনুবাদ করা হয়নি। আবার ইংরেজি ধারাবিবরণীতে একই স্টেশন—উত্তরা উত্তর—কে কখনো “Uttara Uttar”, আবার কখনো “Uttara North” বলা হচ্ছে।

একই লাইনে, একই সেবায়, এমন ভাষাগত অসামঞ্জস্য চোখে পড়ে। বিষয়টি খুব বড় নয়, কিন্তু রাষ্ট্রীয় একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সেবায় ভাষার ক্ষেত্রে এই ছোটখাটো অগোছালো ভাবটা বেমানান।

মেট্রোরেল কর্তৃপক্ষের উচিত এই ভাষাগত অসামঞ্জস্য দূর করা এবং বাংলা ও ইংরেজি—উভয় ধারাবিবরণীতে একটি সুসংগত ও মানসম্মত রীতি অনুসরণ করা।

ভাষার শুদ্ধতা ও ধারাবাহিকতাও তো উন্নত সেবারই অংশ।

Although proper nouns are generally not translated, the Dhaka Metro Rail announcements translate the names of stations such as Secretariat, Dhaka University, Uttara South, and Uttara North into English for the convenience of foreign passengers. That makes sense.

What is interesting, however, is the inconsistency. In the Bangla announcements, only Uttara Center Station is left untranslated and is simply announced as “Uttara Center.” Yet in the English announcements, Uttara North Station is referred to inconsistently—sometimes as “Uttara Uttar” and at other times as “Uttara North.”

Such linguistic inconsistency within the same service is noticeable. It may seem minor, but for a key national transport system, this lack of uniformity feels out of place.

The Metro Rail authorities should address this issue and adopt a clear, consistent standard for both Bangla and English announcements.

After all, clarity and consistency in language are also part of quality service.
