Mitosis is the fundamental biological process whereby one cells divides and becomes two. Initially, the chromosomes containing DNA are duplicated (light blue) and align in the middle of the dividing cell. They are then pulled apart by the mitotic spindle (yellow-orange), followed by the final cleavage - known as cytokinesis - creating two cells. This ensures that both new cells receive an identical set of chromosomes.

But new research into how these cells avoid death has revealed that an existing medication could force long-living immune cells to die, providing new hope for treating autoimmune conditions.
