Action:
Sushma sits silently on the hospital bed, leaning back with her legs stretched out. A sheet covers her up to the waist. She wears dark sunglasses and a blood-stained bandage on her head. Due to severe injury and blood loss, Sushma has lost her eyesight. Beside her sits her unemployed husband, Sujon, deeply upset.
Dialogue 1 – Sujon (sadly, lowering his head):
You married me even knowing I was unemployed—only because you were working.
Sushma remains silent, staring in one direction.
Dialogue 2 – Sujon (raising his head slightly, sadly):
We lived such a happy life with our family all these days.
Sushma remains silent, slightly turning her face.
Dialogue 3 – Sujon (worried and distressed):
We need to run the household… and we also need money for your treatment.
Sushma stays silent, turning her face away.
Dialogue 4 – Sujon:
But what should I do now?
Sushma bends her knees while lying back and turns away.
Dialogue 5 – Sujon:
Is it even possible for me to suddenly get a job in this unemployed life?
Sushma slightly turns her face toward Sujon.
Dialogue 6 – Sujon:
But we must do something.
Sushma gently nods her head and replies—
Dialogue 7 – Sushma:
We will. And now, we will do even more.
Sujon looks surprised.
Dialogue 8 – Sujon:
What did you say? More—where nothing exists?
Dialogue 9 – Sushma:
Yes. And I will continue working as well.
Sujon is stunned.
Dialogue 10 – Sujon:
What are you saying?! I will get a job—and you will work too?
Sushma gives a faint smile.
Dialogue 11 – Sujon:
It may be possible for me… but you can’t see anymore!
Dialogue 12 – Sushma:
It’s true. There is no light in my eyes now.
But with the light of my heart, I will do everything.
Sujon looks at her in astonishment.
Dialogue 13 – Sushma:
Even if you don’t get a job now, it will be fine.
Dialogue 14 – Sujon:
What are you saying, Sushma?
How will you walk? How will you write?
Dialogue 15 – Sushma:
That day, on the road, I saw a blind man.
He had a cane. With that cane, he could walk.
(In imagination, the blind man from Scene 1 is shown.)
Dialogue 16 – Sujon:
But he begs. You are a banker. You need to write and sign documents.
Dialogue 17 – Sushma:
Exactly. You will be my cane.
And since I am blind now, you will be appointed at the bank as my assistant.
Sujon remains silent, staring at Sushma.
Dialogue 18 – Sushma:
You are my light. Will you be able to do it?
