Who was the late Moulana M***i Muhammad Hanif Ragheb Sahb?

Moulana Sheikh Allama Muhammad Hanif Ragheb Arkani (may Allah have mercy on him) was born in 1952 CE (1371 AH / 1164 Rohingya) in the village of Firing Daung, northwest of Rathidaung Township, Arakan (Rakhine State). He was the son of Wali Ahmed, grandson of Turab Ali, and great-grandson of Nurud Din. Allah blessed him with nine children: three sons, they are; Professor Hassan Hanif, Professor Emran Hanif, and Professor Ebrahim Hanif and six daughters. From his early childhood, he showed a natural love for knowledge and a deep sense of piety. He started his basic education in his home village and later continued in well-known Islamic schools in Arakan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

His journey of learning began at Qasim al-Ulum Friending School, where he finished his primary studies. Later, he studied at Rahmaniyah School, Saki Bazaar, Akyab, under the guidance of Sheikh Din Muhammad (the martyr) and Sheikh Maulana Abdul Haq, from whom he gained strong knowledge in Arabic grammar and morphology. He then went on to higher studies at Darul Uloom Miyajanpur, Maungdaw, Moin al-Islam Hathazari, Chattogram, and Zamiriyah Qasim al-Ulum Youth University, where he completed the famous Daurah Hadith in 1977. His thirst for knowledge took him further to Dar al-Iftaa, Nazimabad, Karachi, Pakistan, where he qualified as a M***i in 1981. In his later years, Allah gave him the special honor of memorizing the entire Holy Qur’an with tajweed.

Sheikh Muhammad Hanif was not only a scholar but also a reformer and community leader. During his student life, he took part in the effort to codify the Rohingya script. In 1982, he created a new writing system with its own alphabets, different from other languages, with the aim of preserving the Rohingya language and culture for future generations. Today, the Rohingya community can proudly say that they have their own language like other nations. This script is now being taught in schools, madrasas, and learning centers, keeping his vision alive.

He served as a teacher in Maungdaw, Akyab, Karachi, and Cox’s Bazar, and later founded important institutions such as the Dar al-Tarbiyah Islamic School in Teknaf (1985) and the Islamic Postgraduate Studies and Research Complex in Teknaf (2002). He also authored many valuable books in Arabic, Persian, and Urdu, including Qulliyat Ragheb, Izhar-e-Haqiqat, The Call of Truth, Jihad Arkan, and The Problem of Arakan and Its Solution.

Throughout his life, he was admired for his humility, wisdom, and eloquence, as well as his deep knowledge of philosophy, Islamic jurisprudence, Arabic literature, and poetry in multiple languages. He devoted his whole life to teaching, issuing fatwas, and guiding the Rohingya people with sincerity and patience.

Sheikh Muhammad Hanif Ragheb Arkani passed away on Friday, 10 November 2023 (26 RabiΚΏ al-Thani 1445 AH / 27 Khati Mash 1235 Rohingya) at Dar al-Sunnah University, Hnila, Cox’s Bazar. His funeral was attended by thousands of people from Bangladesh and the Rohingya refugee camps. He was buried in Safrang, Nowa Farah, Cox’s Bazar. His blessed legacy continues to inspire the Rohingya people and the wider Muslim Ummah. May Allah accept his efforts, forgive his shortcomings, and grant him the highest place in Jannah.
