Today is the end of an era and the beginning of a new exciting chapter ❤

15 years ago I opened my Family day care for its unique natural home environment and small group settings.

For me forming the closest bonds with the children and their families has been the most rewarding job in this life so far!

I admire children’s endless energy, honesty, creativity flexibility and resilience!

I want to thank every family for entrusting me with your very special children. I truly feel honored to have been able to play a part in their growth and development ❤

This is a little quote that I love to give to my children...

You are a very special person
And you should know,
How I loved to have you in my care
How fast the months/years did go!

Please come back to visit me
As through the grades you go
Try hard to learn all that you can
There's so much to know

One thing I tried to teach you
To last your whole life through,
Is to know that you are special

Just because, you are you!

Take care beautiful people, be kind, have fun!!! And keep in touch if you can ❤

Love Always
Nadege

The best time to talk logic or reason with a child is not when their emotions are running high.

This is because when emotions are heightened, the emotional part of the brain (the right side) takes over. Trying to talk sense or reason with a child when they’re in this state will likely not get through, as they are not in the logical part of the brain (the left side). We need to connect our right brain to their right brain, that is, meet them where they’re at.

Logic, advice and teaching lessons can come after the emotional wave has been ridden (and depending on how intense the wave, sometimes well after, e.g. the next day).

The best time to talk logic or reason with a child is when they are calm.

Pretend play is commonly known as being important for children’s language and communication skills, experimenting with different social roles, thinking and problem solving skills, and imagination (just to name a few). ⠀

But it can also play a role in relieving any worries or stress by providing an escape from reality, or an opportunity to process reality, and the feelings and emotions that come with it. ⠀

Just as adults may be talking or thinking more about things that are happening around the world right now, children’s play may also have related themes, such as characters who are sick or dying. Don’t be alarmed - this is their way of processing what’s going on around them. ⠀ ⠀

You can create opportunities for pretend play at home using things like:⠀
• Old clothes, shoes and hats for dress ups ⠀
• Dolls and stuffed animals ⠀
• Cooking utensils ⠀
• Old telephones or mobiles ⠀
• Plastic/wooden food items, baskets, and pencils/paper for shopping ⠀
• Sheets and pillows to build forts ⠀
• Occupation-based props like stethoscopes or measuring tapes ⠀
• Toy figurines and vehicles ⠀
• Cardboard boxes⠀

Go to the crying child. Especially the child under 7. The wrong coloured pencil, the sand in their shoe, the book that they didn’t want to read - it is all a big deal to them.

Think about the life experiences they have had. They haven’t experienced what we have and therefore have no frame of reference for how big their problem objectively is.

Their brain is also still in the egocentric stage of development, where everything is all about them.

Plus, their prefrontal cortex isn’t anywhere near as developed as an adult’s, meaning they do not have the ability to regulate themselves, or are only just beginning to learn this.

Dismissing their feelings (e.g. “you get what you get and you don’t get upset”…) or leaving them to deal with their emotions on their own stays with them. They may not be able to explicitly recall being left to cry on their own, but it will be stored in their brain and body along with other similar experiences (in their implicit memory), and contribute to their core beliefs (schemas), perceptions, and assumptions about the world as they grow up.

Meeting a child’s feelings with shame, ridicule or punishment also puts their nervous system under stress and their brain in a more reactive state, meaning they will remain in a heightened state and be more likely to become upset or triggered again.

There is just too much research and evidence behind this for it to be ignored.⠀

If a child is upset, go to them.

And as always - parents, teachers, anyone caring for children - you won’t get it right 100% of the time. We are all still learning and doing the best we can with the resources we have.

You may have noticed that our children were born with the ability to know what they want (ice cream!) and when they want it (now!).

How to communicate those needs, however, is a skill that needs developing.

Remember that adults who let their needs become stifled by others (or learn to do the repressing themselves) were once children who never found the middle ground of assertiveness.

Here's one helpful way you can illustrate to your children that they can speak up for their needs, while also showing respect for others' desires.
