✨ TALK TIP TUESDAYS ✨
🪞 Mirror, Mirror!
Let your child watch your mouth and theirs in a mirror. This builds visual awareness and self-monitoring.
➡️ Cue: “Let’s be mouth detectives! Where is your tongue?”
Try brushing teeth together and naming lips, tongue, teeth to get used to watching closely.

The bridge to literacy is an important journey that children walk, each in their own way. Educators in early childhood play a vital role in supporting children as they begin to explore language and literacy skills in authentic, play-based environments. This workshop will give an overview of six critical areas for literacy development, giving examples of practical application of these skills. It will also focus on what can impact literacy acquisition and help educators reflect on their current practice.

✨ TALK TIP TUESDAYS ✨
Repeat your child’s words back to them — clearly and naturally.
Child: “Tar go!”
You: “The car goes! Yes!”
💬 It’s called recasting — and it helps your child hear the correct model while keeping the conversation going.

Speld Kindy is now offering a brand new workshop called 'Exploring Numeracy - more than just numbers'.
Being numerate is the capacity and confidence to use mathematics in daily life. This workshop is a hands-on session designed for Kindy educators to explore the Numeracy overview within QKLG. We discuss the importance of mathematical vocabulary and how we can support ALL children to access learning opportunities in every day routines.
We model opportunities for play based problem solving, ensuring mathematical ideas with which children interact are relevant and meaningful in the context of their current lives.
This workshop emphasises practical learning, empowering educators to create inclusive, language rich environments that support all children’s numeracy development.
If your Kindy is interested in this or any of our other Professional Development workshops, please contact us via phone 07 3391 7900, email [email protected], or go to our website speld.org.au/speld-kindy

Last week, one of our education advisors and one of our speech pathologists took Douglas on an adventure to support many of the kindys in the Fraser Coast region. The Speld Kindy team members presented our 'Phonological and Phonemic Awareness' and 'Enhancing Communication Through Visual Supports' workshops to ten Kindy teams. They also enjoyed modelling some of these skills and strategies during targeted on the floor support at a number of Fraser Coast centres.

Speld Qld welcomes and fully endorses the Queensland Reading Commitment recently announced by Education Minister Grace Grace. The focus on explicitly teaching reading through evidence-informed teaching practices means that students, especially those with learning difficulties, can successfully become readers. Positioning differentiated reading instruction as a key element of the Reading Commitment is important for all learners, but imperative for students with a Specific Learning Disorder with an Impairment in Reading.
Speld Qld supports many learners who find the process of reading challenging. We believe this Reading Position statement presents a clear, explicit approach to reading instruction that will build skills and confidence, and open all learners to the power of reading and the life-long, positive impact it provides.
