Here’s something you can try after your young athlete’s next game.
Instead of immediately asking:
“How did you go?”
Try asking:
“What are you proud of?”
Then:
“What did you learn?”
And finally:
“What’s one thing you want to work on next time?”
Three simple questions.
But they change the conversation.
You’re moving away from:
Result → judgement
and towards:
Reflection → learning → ownership
Your child doesn’t need you to analyse every mistake.
They don’t need you to solve every problem.
And they don’t need you to tell them whether they were good enough.
They need space to think.
Space to reflect.
And, over time, the confidence to own their own development.
That’s one of the biggest shifts we can make as parents:
From being the coach to being the supporter.
Because ultimately, we’re not trying to create athletes who need us to tell them what to do.
We’re trying to develop young people who can eventually coach themselves.
That’s the kind of athlete development we’re passionate about at Amplify.
Develop the athlete. Not just the performance.
