Auslan Advocacy in Regional Towns:
Stop the Judgment and Stand United
[Video Description: Auslan translation text provided below]
I am deeply disappointed by some of the judgment from people who don't have full knowledge of the situation regarding Auslan advocacy in our education system. We are all out here trying to support Deaf people, Deaf educators, interpreters, SLSOs, and Auslan support aides across childcare, schools, and community spaces.
It's important to remember that regional areas face unique challenges, worsened by strict rules around qualifications and certifications, meaning access to qualified educators in local childcare and school environments is limited. When local workers take the respectful step to ask the Deaf community for permission to use basic Auslan to support in these settings, they should be championed, not judged.
Many support people are deeply dedicated and have worked hard to learn Auslan to stay involved. Negative assumptions only hurt the reputation of students who genuinely want to help. Instead of relying blindly on websites or outside advice, it is always best to ask questions directly upfront before passing judgment.
To those who always show up, collaborate, and help to advocate for our community; thank you for your ongoing support. Your dedication makes all the difference. Don't give up, even when someone tries to pull you down. Keep pushing forward!
Parenting means doing what is best for your child, even if it makes others uncomfortable or breaks traditional "rules." We choose regulation, comfort, and peace over expectations every single time. Hope you all understand and support our journey.
