📖 Miss Knapton read Somebody’s Land by Adam Goodes, illustrated by David Hardy. While reading, we noticed a beautiful illustration of the night sky featuring the Emu in the Sky.
🌠 For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, the night sky holds important knowledge about seasons, animals, plants and when certain foods are available. We talked about how the Emu in the Sky is a large emu shape constellation that can be seen when we look up at the night sky. 🌙 We looked at images of the Emu in the Sky. The position of the Emu changes throughout the year. For example, when it looks like it’s sitting on the land, that’s when emus are laying their eggs! 🪺
The students:
🎨 experimented with different colours and brushes to create their own night skies
🐦 cut and pasted an emu or their own chosen Australian animal into their artwork
✨ finished with a touch of glitter to represent the stars twinkling in the night sky
The children loved exploring and creating their own night sky artworks!
🔭 Perhaps tonight, you might like to head outside with your child, look up at the stars and see if you can spot the Emu in the Sky together. 💖
