Encouraging mark making on a vertical surface with chalk in pre-primary. This builds essential upper-body strength and promotes a proper, stable pencil grip. Writing on a vertical plane naturally positions the wrist in an extended (upward) angle.

The children and families in the pre-primary class celebrated their learning and discoveries in term 2 with a Possum Magic evening on a crisp winter’s night. They enjoyed a supper on the classroom veranda and tried out some of the foods from the story Possum Magic. They also played a torchlight game, sang some songs , listened to the story Possum Magic and then went for a torchlight walk in the bush surrounding the oval. There were excited gasps when a REAL possum was spotted. Some even spotted a second possum!

Our place in the bush! How lucky are we being able to experience this once a week during Bush School, right on our school grounds! Wonderful parent helpers enhance the experience. Children can be children and do the “work” of children-play and explore and express themselves, scaffolded by parents and teachers who care for them. Cubby or shelter building, dramatic play, climbing, running and creating with sticks, string, gum nuts and leaves, and a few enhancements brought from the classroom.,

Bush school in Pre-primary. Filled with intention, one of the students brought a book with instructions on how to build a cubby for the second time to Bush School. In a previous Bush School session, one of the parent volunteers had helped him use his book to build a cubby. In this second session, he built the cubby without adult help with a friend. Total focus and a sense of purpose. The book is propped up on the cubby in the second photo.

Bush School is such a valuable time of the week. It is an antidote to the hyper-connected and frenetic, over-scheduled lives that we have. It is a source of constant amazement how creative and ingenious children can become with string, leaves and gum nuts.
