LORETO LOOKBACK | From First Pitch to Final Season: Softball at Loreto
Loreto Coorparoo students have always embraced sport with enthusiasm, determination and school spirit, and the recent successes in Netball, Cross Country, Volleyball and AFL amongst other things, continue that proud tradition.
A little-known part of Loreto’s sporting history is the place softball once held in school life. Introduced in 1972, as noted in that year’s Yearbook, softball quickly became the most popular of the new sports offered and gave many students opportunities for teamwork, friendly competition and school spirit. For more than three decades, Loreto girls took to the diamond with enthusiasm, and the sport became a valued part of the school’s co-curricular program. Although softball came to an end after the 2008 season, it remains an important chapter in Loreto’s sporting story and a reminder of the many ways students have represented the school over the years.
One of my personal favourite archive items is a pair of softball ‘knickerbockers’ from the early days of the sport at Loreto—they certainly do not make them like they used to. Did you play softball at Loreto, or do you have a memory or photograph to share? The Archives would be delighted to hear from you. Email [email protected].

💙 Felicity celebrations at Loreto College Coorparoo 💙
It is wonderful to see Loreto College Coorparoo exploring the Loreto value of Felicity this year through the theme “Live with joy. Grow in love.” This phrase reminds us that joy and felicity are things we choose to find in simple yet meaningful, moments, and that love extends beyond ourselves, remaining present and sustaining us even in times of darkness.
Lucia Elliot, 2026 Art Council Leader, worked with students to design the College’s Felicity banner and reflects on the creative process:
“We chose to use the symbol of a shooting star to represent a small moment where felicity can be found, while also symbolising hope, faith and guidance. Woven throughout the clouds are strings of pearls, included to commemorate Mother Gonzaga Barry, and symbolise the journey and legacy of Loreto over the last 150 years.”
These creative expressions of the Mary Ward charism capture the hope, legacy, and light that continue to inspire and guide the Loreto community, now and into the future.
