You realise: money isn't something you get from a job.

This isn't about quitting your job (not everyone has to, or wants to).

You walk through life differently, when you know...

If you lost your job, you'd still have a way to make money.
If you don't get that promotion, you can still meet your financial goals.
If you wanted a part-time or lower-paying job, you can make up the difference elsewhere.

Because now, your employer doesn't control your pay-cheque. You do.

My wealth journey has taken me far more unlearning, than learning.

I learned how to invest.
But I also had to unlearn the instinct to blindly follow what other people told me to do.
I had to unlearn the fear that it was too complicated for me to figure out.
I had to unlearn the idea that investing was risky, and I’d lose money.

I learned how to sell and market my offers.
But I also had to unlearn the fear of what other people might think or say.

Without this, no amount of learning really helps.

You can know how to invest, what investments to buy...and still be procrastinating out of fear.
You can create the perfect business in your mind...without ever taking the leap to start.
You can hire a financial advisor, have a detailed financial plan...and still be full of financial anxiety.

It’s easy to think our goals are on the other side of learning something more, something new. But often, it’s actually on the other side of unlearning the things that are keeping you stuck where you are.

I know. Everyone’s telling you: “Here’s the X strategy I used to create $Y results in Z time-frame, and I can teach you how to as well.”

Property gurus tell you that property is the golden ticket to financial freedom.
Internet marketing gurus promise that building a funnel and running ads will fix your business.
Influencers tell you: just create content everyday, and you’ll blow up.

So, you do it...and maybe it even works. Maybe you get the results you wanted. But somehow, you’re still unhappy. Because you never factored your happiness into the equation in the first place.

I chose ETFs over property, because in that season of my life, I wanted something minimal-maintenance and high-liquidity.

I made business decisions that fit the life I wanted, not just the money I wanted. I turned down opportunities (book deals, angel investors). I didn’t rely on social media for early traction. I chose marketing channels and a business model that worked with my strengths.

Often, when I’m helping clients evaluate different strategies, it’s not about: “what’s going to get me the biggest, fastest financial ROI?” It’s: Will this give me the peace-of-mind or lifestyle I want? Does this fit with my personal risk tolerance? Do I want the nature of work involved with this strategy?

Because a strategy that only works financially, isn’t a strategy that really works. Eventually, that will just become another golden cage.

"Jesus was a salesman." Years ago, this sudden lightbulb went off, and it transformed my relationship with sales, instantly. This is what I now tell my clients.

One of the biggest blocks I see in small-business owners is the resistance to selling.

I get it. I've been there.

I didn't have any real experience or training in sales. So, when I started down the road of self-employment, I found myself suddenly needing to sell without having any real idea how.

It was brutally uncomfortable. I loved talking to people. I hated getting to the bit where I would share how they could work with me (...even when they literally asked me, "So, how can I work with you?")

Here's what I eventually realised...

From Jesus to Gandhi, from Buddha to Martin Luther King, they were all selling something.

But it was rooted in deep conviction and belief in their own vision. They weren't delivering a sales pitch. They were sharing their truth. And that is what touches people. That is what people feel. That is what moves people to follow your lead.

So, you can sell like someone who is trying to get something from someone. You can follow a script and use the "right words" and make it into some kind of performance.

Or you can learn how to sell like someone who believes so deeply in your work, you impact, your vision, that people *want* to be a part of your world.

For small business owners, one of those foundational principles is: business is about people.

Not content. Not ads. Not websites. Not funnels. Not sales and revenue. Not conversion rates. People.

You can spend one month updating your website. Or you can talk to 5 people who might be interested in your work.
You can pump out more content on Chat-GPT. Or you can start a real conversation with some of your followers.
You can spend thousands on the perfect brand aesthetic. Or you can create a real connection with your customers.

It's amazing how many of my clients start getting more clients within weeks, with this simple reminder. Because they stopped chasing hacks, and started having real conversations with real people, which resulted in real sales.

I had to simultaneously take more ownership of how I was communicating my value, whilst releasing attachment to other people's decisions.

I was demoralised when it took way, way longer than I expected to hit my desired milestones.
I had to develop staying power and patience.

I was exhausted when it felt I'd studied and tried everything I could, and still wasn't seeing the growth I wanted.
I had to deepen my humility and ability to ask for help.

That satisfaction, when you look back at who you once were, and who you've grown into?

The real prize isn't what you get to have. It's about who you get to become.

I couldn't have predicted that when I tried to quit my job, I'd be offered a transfer to my dream job.
But I wouldn't have ever gotten that offer, if I'd listened to everyone who told me to just "stick it out."

I couldn't have predicted that Channel 7 News would want to feature me, within my first year of starting my business.
But I wouldn't have gotten that opportunity, if I hadn't had the courage to start in the first place.

I couldn't have predicted that one of my media stories would go viral and bring in two-months worth of revenue in two-weeks.
But that would never have happened, if I hadn't spent countless hours learning how to craft and pitch great media stories.

I couldn't have predicted that COVID-19 would crash the market, creating a great opportunity to buy more investments.
But I wouldn't have been able to capitalise on that opportunity, had I not put in the work to learn to invest first.

This is what I tell clients who get too fixated on "how" to get X result.

You can over-analyse, over-plan, over-think everything, but it won't help because you can't fully control exactly how it's going to play out.

There's this balance you have to strike, between showing-up, doing the work, putting yourself in the best possible position to win...and then letting go of the outcome.

That is when magic happens, the kind that is so much better than you could have planned for anyway. ;)

It takes minutes to move money into your investment account and buy some ETFs. What makes it hard is the nagging worry that you might lose money, what if you’re doing it wrong, is this like gambling, what if the market crashes?

It takes minutes to write a social media post and hit publish. What makes it hard is the nauseating fear of what people will think, will your old highschool crush see it, will people make fun of you, what if you get trolled?

It takes minutes to increase the prices on your website. What makes it hard is the anxiety that your customers might stop working with you, what if they say you’re too expensive, what if they question if you’re worth it?

Investing isn’t hard. Your resistance to it is.
Selling isn’t hard. Your resistance to it is.
Social media isn’t hard. Your resistance to it is.

You don’t need to push harder. You need less resistance.

When you learn how to move past that resistance and turn down the mental and emotional noise, the action stops feeling like an uphill battle, and becomes the easy, obvious next-step.

Yesterday, you were worrying about how to get your next client.
Today, you could get an email with an opportunity you weren’t even thinking about.

It didn’t work out yesterday, so we stop showing up with enthusiasm today, having already decided from past experience that it’s not going to work out.

We call this practicality. Being realistic. Rational. But really, we’re just colouring our future with the results of the past. We show-up with the expectation of failure, and then wonder why we don’t succeed.

It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

But you can wipe the slate clean. You can reconnect to the infinite possibility that exists in every moment, and remember that literally anything is possible. Because the future is not written.
