Last Thursday, students from Years 7–12 joined us for a full day of coding fun and creativity at our Scratch and GameMaker workshops!

✨ In the morning, our Year 7–9 participants learned to design and build their own interactive games using Scratch, while the afternoon session saw Year 10–12 students dive deeper into GameMaker, exploring game logic, sprites, and design principles.

These workshops gave students a hands-on introduction to programming — empowering them with the foundational skills to continue exploring the exciting world of coding. 🚀

A huge thank you to our amazing UNSW Computer Science and Software Engineering student facilitators, who shared their passion, insights, and real-world experiences with future tech innovators 🙌

Register NOW to secure your place in one of our game development workshops on Thursday, 9 October!

Have an interest in game development or want an opportunity to try something new? UNSW Young Women in Engineering (WIE) has collaborated with UNSW CompClub to create two fantastic workshops for high school students who want to begin their journey in game development!

These are in-person workshops being held at the UNSW Kensington campus.

In each free FREE workshop you will gain confidence in programming, learn the fundamentals of game design, and walk away having created your very own game.

Two workshops being run on Thursday, `9 October:

Year 7-9 morning Scratch workshop: 9am - 12:30pm
Year 10-12 afternoon GameMaker workshop: 1:30pm - 5pm

APPLICATIONS FOR THE NAIDOC DESIGN CHALLENGE ARE CLOSING SOON!!

We have challenged you to design a modern engineering solution that is inspired by, adapted from, or directly integrates an Indigenous Australian engineering technology, structure, or method.

An example of fire stick farming is shown! Fire stick farming is a way of managing the environment Aboriginal communities have practiced for tens of thousands of years.

It improves the health of the land and wildlife by setting cool burns, generally spot fires with smaller, more controlled flames during the early, cool dry season.

This helps prevent the build-up of vegetation that leads to the larger, hotter, uncontrolled fires of Australia’s scorching months.

“I want to be an engineer when I grow up.”
That’s the spark we hope to ignite – a vision of themselves in STEMM that feels real, exciting, and possible.

Despite the rain, the smiles were unstoppable as we held Girls in STEMM – Day 2 🌧️⚡. The girls from Bardia Public School returned for Day 2 of our Girls in STEMM program, eager to see new faces and discover what it’s really like to be an engineer.

We kicked off with Juline H., introducing the Young WiE (Women in Engineering) Club – opening their eyes to the networks, mentorship, and opportunities that could one day be theirs.

Then it was off to explore different engineering adventures across campus:
🌱 Floating mangroves with Laura Montaño Luna – where ecology meets engineering.
💧 Water filtration with Fitri Widhiastuti – tackling one of the world’s most urgent challenges.
🚗 Fuel cell cars with Irène Renaud-Assemat – clean energy and innovation in motion.

The Rehabilitation Engineering Society UNSW joined forces with the UNSW Biomedical Engineering Students' Society and UNSW Mending Broken Hearts to host an inspiring Careers Night 🦾🤝

Students had the chance to gain insights from industry, network with peers, and explore opportunities in biomedical engineering 🗣️. They loved connecting with students, faculty, and professionals, while also sharing updates on their Total Artificial Heart (TAH) progression 🫀⚙️.

😈 DIGIDEMONS TAKE 4TH PLACE + PEOPLE’S CHOICE 🥳

UNSW’s DIGIDEMONS team smashed their way through the Sumobots knockouts and even made it to the finale! With ultrasonic sensors on both sides, their double-sided bot was tough to knock out head-on 👀.

Although their opponents eventually took them out from the side (and with sheer weight 💪), the team is incredibly proud of how far DIGIDEMON came. From last-minute redesigns and laser cutting, to creating their iconic two-faced design (demon + cute side 😅), the journey was full of learning, teamwork, and laughs.

Huge shoutout to Robotics & Mechatronics Society UNSW for organising such a fun competition.
