A Midwife’s Birth 🤍

It’s been a little while between birth stories, and I think this one is a pretty special one to come back with.

This story follows the journey of a beautiful colleague who, even before she was pregnant, was already interested in supporting women through homebirth… so naturally, when it was her turn, she planned one for herself. 🥰

Pregnancy gifted her with some of the icky sicky feels, which made those early months pretty tough — especially while working in a profession that asks so much of us, both physically and emotionally.

Thankfully, she had the most beautiful, gentle and supportive partner by her side. Her absolute rock through those challenging days.

She also invested in some extra education, body preparation and support to help place herself in the best position she could for birth — physically and mentally.

Alongside all of this was her knowledge as a midwife and her deep trust in physiological birth.

And while that knowledge can be such a gift… sometimes it can also make things a little harder.

Because as midwives, we can put so much pressure on ourselves to have the “perfect” birth. We know the physiology. We know the evidence. We know all the things that should help birth unfold beautifully.

But birth still has a way of reminding us that we are human too. ❤️

Choice for women in childbirth is constantly being challenged. To protect and support Midwives working in the homebirth space, we require second Midwives. These wonderful midwives don’t always hold insurance as they float between the hospital and home. They integral to many rural communities where endorsed Midwives are limited. So delighted to see this as RCOG policy, and much appreciation to authors, especially obstetrician Andrew Weeks who has been advocating for 'optimal cord management' for decades..
"The minutes after birth are now recognised as a time of remarkable change within the baby and we have learned that interfering with this natural process can cause potential harm...
Early cord clamping will result in the baby having a lower blood volume as it is estimated that a baby at full term will receive around 30% of its total blood volume from placental transfer via the umbilical cord. The decision on timing to clamp the umbilical cord should be based on observations of the baby, its heart rate and breathing rather than a predefined interval after birth. Also, the palpable pulsation of the cord is unrelated to the blood flowing back and forth therefore it should not be used to guide the time when clamping occurs. Clamping at the placental end allows some blood in the cord to transfer to the newborn. There are other benefits to the baby from the placental transfer of blood such as transfer of stem cells."

Birth after two caesareans 🤍

This gorgeous family were expecting baby number three when they reached out through a friend. It had been quite a few years since their last baby, and both of her previous births had ended in caesareans for different reasons. She’d never actually laboured before.

When we first met, we spent a lot of time chatting about her options. While there can be a lot of fear around birth after two caesareans, the evidence is really supportive of offering women the opportunity to labour when their previous caesareans have been uncomplicated. Like every birth, it wasn’t about guaranteeing an outcome, but about making informed decisions together and having a plan should we need one.

She felt this really strong pull to give it a go.

From the very beginning she was so beautifully cruisy. She wasn’t trying to control every little thing, she just quietly trusted her body and her baby. There was something really lovely about that.

Almost a week after her due date my phone rang in the early hours of the morning.

Between little laughs she said, “My waters just popped!”

She sounded so excited… and a little surprised by what she’d just felt. I encouraged her to head back to bed if she could because, as we all know, first labours like to take their time.

And that’s exactly what this one did.

Throughout the day her surges ticked along every seven minutes or so. Some were spicy, some were pretty manageable, but she just kept breathing, moving and getting on with it.

Then, as the blue moon rose that evening, labour decided it was time to get serious.
