⋒ Did you know at school we let kids make mistakes?

During writing time we encourage kids to have a go, sound out the word, write down what they think it might sound like or look like.

We ask them to show us what they know and then we will work with them to correct it.

An oops provides learning opportunities. A what if can be a blank page where neither the child or their teacher knows where to start.

Moral of the story. Let your kids make mistakes. Let them have a go. Teachers are very skilled at decoding writing that doesn’t necessarily make sense to other adults but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t show promise and progression.

Next time your child has an oops remind them it’s better than a what if.

Are you worried about your little one starting prep next year?

Give them a head start with our School Readiness Program that will run weekly over the school holiday break. This program is designed for 4-5 year olds.

Our sessions will focus on early reading and writing skills, oral language, counting and number work, fine motor skills and developing their resilience and confidence before that big leap into prep!

⋒ Today I learnt more about toddler tantrums. Not about HOW they look (as every mum has seen that!). I learnt about WHY they happen. I was playing train sets with my nearly two year old when all of a sudden he started pulling the track apart and being destructive. At first I thought he had just got silly and was over it but as I built it again and watched him play I saw that when he tried to push the train along it kept falling off the track. He wasn’t being destructive, he was just plain frustrated as he didn’t have the fine motor skills to gently push the train and keep it on the track. So instead of being mad at him I showed him again how to gently and slowly push the train. Moral of the story - take the time to look for the WHY of behaviour and maybe you’ll both learn a thing or two like us.

⋒ Children often think adults know everything but we are all still learning too! Learning new things, asking Google the answer to that dinosaur question the kids want to know, learning to change and adapt to what life throws at us (hello home-schooling stint of 2020!). Last year was a huge example of ‘learning the way on the way’ and now this new crazy world has become our new normal. So don’t forget that it’s important to show our children that we are all still learning along the way too.

⋒ Is your child ready for school? It’s a tricky question for some and often parents are unsure what being school ready really requires. One example involves patterns. Can your child make simple patterns? Can they predict what comes next? Can they name the colours or shapes they have used to make a pattern? Patterns involve predicting and reasoning skills which contributes heavily to a child’s early mathematical understanding. Our go to for making patterns is these magnetic shapes. They allow children to be as creative as they like and keeps the fun going.

⋒ When children are learning new things it’s important to show them that it’s ok to make mistakes. Reinforce that they are trying their very best and that’s all you can ask for. Praise them for taking on your feedback and having another go. Modelling yourself making mistakes will also benefit them and let me tell you, they are very quick to let me know if I haven’t spelt something correctly or if I’m missing a capital letter! They need to realise that ANYBODY, even their teacher or their mum or dad, can make mistakes and the world won’t end!

⋒ Sand play is as imaginative and open ended as play can get. Think dinosaur land, crawly creatures, hidden letters, hose volcanos.. anything goes. This pile of sand actually belonged to my landscaper hubby but alas he didn’t spread it in time and the kids took over! We’re not even mad... we actually got to relax while the kids were entertained all afternoon!
