✨ 37 years in classrooms has taught me one thing…

I’ve trialled A LOT of teaching ideas!

Some have become firm favourites. Some lasted for a little while. And some I’ve pulled back out years later and thought…

“Why did I ever stop doing this?” 😂

This little idea is one of those.

I found a powerful word in an engaging book, KABOOM!, and turned it into Word Art.

Then I modelled how I could use that word in my own writing.

Simple. Visual. Memorable.

And most importantly, it gave students a reason to notice a word, play with it and then use it.

Because the strategy isn’t really the clever bit.

The thinking it creates is. 💡

After 37 years in classrooms, I’ve learnt that great teaching isn’t about having a cupboard full of perfect strategies.

It’s about trialling, tweaking, reflecting and keeping the ideas that make a difference.

And I’m still trying new things! 💛

This is the kind of professional learning I love to provide. ❤️

Not just “here’s another strategy” and off you go…

It’s about stopping, thinking and reflecting on what actually helps learning happen.

In this session, we explored 10 practical strategies for reflecting on learning, then put them to the test.

We used a 3D continuum to rate the tools, discussed our thinking, justified our choices and considered how each strategy could be used with learners.

And then we finished where good professional learning should finish…

with a goal for what comes next. 🎯

Practical ideas.
Rich discussion.
Professional thinking.
Time to reflect.

Because professional learning shouldn’t just give you something new to try.

It should give you something new to think about. 🤩

🧠 Growing a Class Brain

What happens when you make everyone’s thinking visible… and then start connecting it?

I recently used this simple strategy with teachers during a PL session.

Each person added a thought or idea to a pipe cleaner.

Then we started connecting our thinking.

And as the connections grew, so did our Class Brain! 🧠

I loved watching the thinking develop because it made something really important visible:

New learning doesn’t happen in isolation. It grows when we connect it to what we already know, what others know and the ideas we build together. 💡

And yes… it got a little tangled! 😂

But actually, I think that’s part of the fun.

Learning isn’t always neat and tidy.
