Well earned recognition for an outstandingly committed student AND support team!

Young people are our future, and they can most certainly change the world.

The University of Sydney recently hosted the 2022 BIOTech Futures Challenge, where high school students from Australia and New Zealand engineered solutions to address current problems in healthcare and the environment.

We are so of Evelyn (Year 9) who was awarded first place for her idea to help amputees experience touch and sensation from their prosthetics. Evelyn was commended on her approach to providing greater access for those with a disability, winning a 3D printer and D.I.Y. robotic arm kit.

This is a series of 9 observations taken by Webb’s NIRCam instrument, capturing the effects of colliding with asteroid Dimorphos as a test of planetary defense. Webb wasn’t the only space telescope with eyes on this target — NASA's Hubble Space Telescope also caught the aftermath of the impact, marking the first time both telescopes were used to observe the same target at the same time.

Webb took one observation of the impact location pre-collision, then several observations over the next few hours. The images from Webb’s NIRCam instrument show a tight, compact core, with plumes of material appearing as wisps streaming from the center of the impact site.

Observing the impact with Webb was a unique challenge. The asteroid moved over at a speed over 3 times faster than the original speed limit Webb was designed to track! In the weeks leading up to the impact, teams carefully tested how they would accomplish the task.

By the way, this isn’t the last Webb is seeing of this asteroid! Scientists plan to follow-up by observing the same asteroid system with Webb’s MIRI and NIRSpec instruments, both of which should provide insight into the chemical makeup of Dimorphos.

The da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. Students compete in teams of eight across 10 disciplines: engineering, mathematics and chess, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and legacy.

Nothing better than seeing where the innovation happened.

Our Principal Dr Hadwen has paid a visit to UCLA, the birthplace of the internet. She is currently in the US visiting educational institutions and meeting with former students whose studies and careers have led them abroad.

Dr H is looking forward to hearing from some of the best STEM programs in the world – and bringing that knowledge back to our girls at Pymble.
