Renowned for his striking ability, his ground game is underrated but just as effective as his stand-up game, which is credited to his years of BJJ (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) training. Notable grapplers he has submitted include Dan Henderson, Travis Lutter and Chael Sonnen.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu traces its origins back to Japan when Japanese diplomat Mitsyuo Mada moved to South America to form the modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, one of several types of mixed martial arts. Maeda's Jiu-Jitsu combines a mixture of classical Japanese jiu-jitsu, Kodokan Judo, and his innovative techniques. Since then, Maeda has evolved the traditional Jiu-Jitsu form into kids' Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, youth Jiu-Jitsu and Jiu-Jitsu women's styles.

Since the 1990s, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has increased in popularity dramatically, with Jiu-Jitsu gyms dotted around major suburban areas in Sydney. Members of the Sydney Jiu-Jitsu community can attest to the benefits experienced through Jiu-Jitsu holistically.
