‘Christmas Tree’ was a very important event in the Sutton Public School calendar for decades. With no hall at the school, Sutton Hall was the centre of the festivities.
A large Christmas tree would be dragged inside and carefully placed on the stage before being beautifully decorated. The Christmas party would be held in the evening and would often be accompanied by talent contests. Huge tables would groan with the weight of delicious food supplied by parents and the community – delicious freshly baked scones, slices, tray bakes and sandwiches. Often Jack Kershaw from the post office provided ice cream from tubs, eaten with a wooden spoon. There was much anticipation until Father Christmas arrived with his sack bursting with gifts. Gwen Kershaw at the shop, or Mrs Boller, the principal’s wife and others were there to ensure all children received a gift.
