Pre-reading skills! What exactly are they? And how do we develop them in our young children?

You may think reading begins with words, but actually, it starts with SOUNDS. Hearing sounds in words is a vital step on a child’s journey to reading, and yet it is often over-looked, and rushed. Before they can delve into the joys of reading a book, they need to understand that sounds come together to make words. This is called ‘Phonemic Awareness’.

So what can we do as parents to help develop these skills in our children?

In the Kangrow box, we’ve got the tools you need! These games focus on:
* Rhyming words
* Hearing syllables in words
* Initial sound recognition - hearing what sound a word begins with
* Letter recognition
* Blending letters together to form words

Let’s chat about our beautiful Kangrow box! Not only is it packaged in a gorgeous, colour co-ordinated and hardy storage box (and, if you’re anything like me, this will TOTALLY appeal to your need for organisation!)…but it is FILLED with fun, learning opportunities!

The box is set up with 10 games, ranging from numeracy concepts and number recognition, to pre-reading skills such as rhyming, syllables and letter recognition. There are also multiple games to develop fine motor and visual perceptual skills. Included are 2 tool boxes, packed with hands-on and colourful apparatus to use in all the games.

To top it off (yes…there is more!), there is an instruction booklet that comes with the complete set! This booklet provides full, step by step instructions on how to play each game, as well as what skills are being targeted. It gives ideas on how to cater to your child’s specific learning needs, and how to “take a step back” if your child finds the new concepts a bit too difficult to start off with. If your child needs something a little harder, there are ideas to extend their learning experience.
