Pre-reading skills! What exactly are they? And how do we develop them in our young children?

You may think reading begins with words, but actually, it starts with SOUNDS. Hearing sounds in words is a vital step on a child’s journey to reading, and yet it is often over-looked, and rushed. Before they can delve into the joys of reading a book, they need to understand that sounds come together to make words. This is called ‘Phonemic Awareness’.

So what can we do as parents to help develop these skills in our children?
