Dud teachers? In Victoria, it’s the lack of phonics that’s the problem
Federal acting education minister Stuart Robert blames teachers for the decline in Australian students’ academic results. Meanwhile, primary school students in this state are denied scientifically proven phonics-based reading education.

The Simple View of Reading.
The Simple View of Reading: Still Conclusive After 36 Years
In 1986, Whole Language, a philosophy for teaching reading that rejected systematic phonics, was approaching peak popularity. Please support!
* IMPORTANT POST - PLEASE READ *
Sadly, despite the fact that children who are at risk of reading difficulties can be identified as early as Prep, rarely does this occur. Far too many children slip through the cracks and either don't receive timely intervention or, as is the case more often than we'd care to admit, never receive the support that they so desperately need. These children go on to become teens who - after years of daily struggle in the classroom - experience school refusal, disengagement, school exclusion, anxiety, depression and self-harm at much higher rates than other young people. By this stage, their self-esteem is destroyed and their learning difficulties are buried under a raft of more pressing concerns.
This heartbreak is entirely preventable, and we all have a moral obligation to do all that we can to prevent it from happening!
Please take 1 minute out of your day and join us in signing this important legislative council e-petition to mandate the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check in Victoria. https://bit.ly/3oyksJQ
A simple screening check conducted in Year 1 has been shown, both in the UK and here in Australia (go SA!), to lead to significant gains in student outcomes, and highlights the importance of explicit, systematic synthetic phonics instruction in the development of confident and competent readers.
Huge thanks to Jacqui Tarquinio for leading this e-petition and advocate extraordinaire Heidi Gregory of Dyslexia Victoria Support for putting together the poster below.

What Can I Do With All These Predictable Books? | Reading Rockets
Many teachers have already reorganized our leveled libraries because we learned that, according to Fountas and Pinnell, “levels have no place in classroom libraries.” Sorting books into bins labeled by theme or topic is time-consuming, but it’s not a difficult task. We immediately see that off...
