To Dai Moto Kurashi - At the foot of the lighthouse it is dark.
Kaicho Nakamura teaches us that it is wise to look inward or underneath the surface and to get in touch with your real strengths.
In our kids classes, we do not only teach students how to kick and punch, but deeper skills such as introspection.

August was a significant month for our dojo, filled with spirit, sweat, and well-earned success!
On the 30th of August, we proudly celebrated two major black belt milestones:
• Senpai Ryan Leggatt was promoted to 2nd Dan Black Belt by demonstrating sound knowledge of the 1st Dan syllabus.
• We also welcomed a new black belt to the dojo, Senpai Kate Colleran, who achieved her Shodan (1st Dan). An incredible accomplishment, and testament to a long commitment. Congratulations, Senpai Kate!
Earlier in the month, on August 16th, two of our senior students advanced to their final step before black belt. Robert Spiegl and Maree Heath were promoted to 1st Kyu (Senior Brown Belt). Great work – the black belt is now in sight!
A huge congratulations to all! Your perseverance and commitment continue to inspire everyone in the dojo. OSU

On the 5th of July, our very own Geordie Thompson traveled to Newcastle alongside Kyoshi Tom, to take on one of the biggest milestones in his Seido journey - his 5th Dan black belt grading.
After years of dedication, teaching and shaping students, Kyoshi Geordie has made us all incredibly proud by successfully earning his 5th Dan.
Kyoshi Geordie has been a pillar of strength and wisdom in Seido and the Perth martial arts community for many years, and this achievement reflects the hard work, discipline and warm spirit he brings to karate consistently.
Please join us in congratulating Kyoshi Geordie on his well deserved accomplishment.

Senpai Sean Spiegl has been training intensively for several months for his Third Dan grading, and last weekend he and Kyoshi Tom traveled to Seido Karate’s Richmond Dojo in Melbourne for his promotion.
Senpai Sean’s months of preparation shone through, and he showed a very high standard of spirit and technique throughout the grading, which he passed with flying colours.
The entire Perth dojo is very proud of our new Sandan. Congratulations Senpai Sean, and to the other successful candidates from the Thornbury dojo, Senpai Al Backstrom and Senpai Euan Rutherford.

24 August 2024 was a very special day for the Perth Seido Karate dojo. Two of our students, Ollianda Clinton-Watts and Geoff Leggatt, undertook their Shodan grading, ie their grading to become first degree black belts.
In fact, their grading started many months ago. Olli and Geoff have been training hard for the promotion for most of the year, together with their training partners Kate Colleran and Senpai Ryan Leggatt. They have been preparing their bodies relentlessly, and have also been developing a deep understanding of the martial art they practice.
We were very fortunate to have Kyoshi Cheryl Porter from Seido Karate Christchurch Shibu come to Perth for the grading. Kyoshi Cheryl taught Olli as a child, and Olli is the 25th of her students to go for either Shodan promotion, an extraordinary record.
The grading took nearly 4 hours. During that time the physical and mental stamina of the candidates was rigorously tested. They were also asked to reflect on the many aspects of Seido karate, including its philosophical foundations, and the application of each part of the syllabus. Among many other things, Olli and Geoff also demonstrated defenses they had developed themselves against armed and unarmed attackers.
The last part of the grading was 40 rounds of sparring, with fresh opponents. This has been deferred for Geoff on medical grounds; Olli was able to complete the sparring on the day and demonstrated tenacious fighting spirit throughout.
We are enormously proud of Senpai Olli and Geoff and what they achieved on Saturday. They demonstrated great expertise, composure, strength and warrior spirit and their performance was quite inspiring.
I thank the instructors at the Perth Dojo, the training partners and everyone else who supported Senpai Olli and Geoff through their journey, in particular their families. Geoff will complete his promotion in the next few weeks once he is cleared to spar. I can’t wait to see what Senpai Olli and Geoff achieve in the next steps of their karate journey.

On 20 July the we held a senior kyu grade promotion, with Rob Spiegl and Andy Riddington grading to second kyu (brown belt) and Kate Colleran grading to first kyu (senior brown belt).
On the day, the three students displayed all of the focus, spirit and determination they have shown in the months of preparation leading up to the grading.
"Kate, Andy and Rob performed magnificently, each passing with flying colours. Everyone at the Perth Seido Karate dojo is very proud of them."

On Saturday 25 May, Seido Karate Perth held our first general grading for the year. We had 9 students going for promotion, all of whom showed a lot of focus, determination and spirit, and all of whom successfully graded.
The candidates ranged in age from 7 to 73. Seido Karate really is for everyone!
Congratulations to everyone to passed their grading, and thank you to everyone who came along to support them.
