NW PRIMARY SCHOOL FUTSAL TOURNAMENT
Last Friday Somerset Primary sent two teams to the NW Primary School Futsal Tournament in Devonport. Having only one student who had ever played futsal before, teams trained for a number of weeks to learn the rules and begin to understand the game. Futsal is a version of indoor soccer played on a basketball sized court. It is fast paced and lots of fun. Our boys team did a fantastic job winning 2 games throughout the day against some very physical opposition. Our very excited girls team won their way into the Grand Final. After a very close game their opponents scored a late goal to win the match. Our girls finishing the tournament as runners up. A brilliant effort for a team who had no experience playing futsal before. Also, even more exciting, 5 of our students were scouted and offered a place in Tasmanian Futsal teams. These teams will compete at the National Schools Titles in Brisbane in September. Well done to Bernardo, Harvey, Nixon, Charlie and Alayna. We are very proud of all our amazing students for their sportsmanship, courage, resilience and effort throughout the tournament.

2026 Prep–Year 6
Communicating Learning Progress with Families

In 2026, your child will undertake learning across the Australian Curriculum learning areas of English, Mathematics, Science, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), Health and Physical Education, The Arts – Music, and Digital Technologies.
Throughout the year, we will share ‘Evidence of Learning’ from across these curriculum areas. Each sample provides a snapshot of your child’s learning based on a specific task. Learning tasks are assessed against the Australian Curriculum, or your child’s Personal Learning Plan where applicable.
From today, we are excited to share the first ‘Evidence of Learning’ samples for 2026, focusing on English and Mathematics. Teachers have provided feedback on your child’s achievement and have suggested areas for future focus as learning progresses.
The accompanying table shows how your child’s work has been assessed against the curriculum. These samples will form part of a broader portfolio of assessment evidence that will inform reporting at mid year and at the end of the year.
We hope you enjoy this opportunity to see a snapshot of your child’s learning and encourage you to celebrate their efforts and reflect together on the feedback provided by their teacher.

Please note: Our Kindergarten families will receive ‘Evidence of Learning’ samples in Terms 2, 3 and 4

Shared on behalf of… ‘Just Cats Tasmania’ (Burnie Centre) – Easter Cat Drawing Activity

“Got a little artist at home these Easter holidays?

Just Cats Tas are inviting children to create Easter-themed cat drawings that we can display on the walls at our Burnie Centre.
Every child who hands in a drawing will receive an Easter egg, and all artwork entered will go into a raffle draw to see whose artwork will be displayed on the wall.
This is just a fun, creative activity for children during the holidays—nothing professional required, just colourful and imaginative cat drawings.
How to enter:
• Draw an Easter-themed cat
• Place your name and age on the back of the page.
• Artwork must be on A4 paper
• Families are asked to bring drawings to the Just Cats Tasmania Burnie Centre (170 Stowport Rd, Stowport)
Opening hours:
11:00am – 3:00pm
Open 6 days a week (Closed Wednesday)”

DECYP Message to Families - North-West region

SCHOOL CLOSED

Subject: Important update – School arrangements for Tuesday, 24 March 2026

Dear families
As you may be aware, the Australian Education Union will be undertaking industrial action across Tasmania this week.

In North West Tasmania, which includes our school, this action will occur tomorrow, on Tuesday, 24 March 2026.

Due to this action, our school will be closed to students on this day, as we will be unable to ensure appropriate supervision and maintain normal school operations.

The school will reopen to students on Wednesday, 25 March 2026.

We recognise that closures due to industrial action are disruptive for families. However, we must be able to ensure adequate safety and supervision of students.

If you are concerned about being unable to make alternative arrangements for your child, please contact the school office as soon as possible.

Kind regards
Lynette Grundy (Principal)
