Assyrian Students' Association of Australia

On this 25th of April 2026, ASAA pays tribute to the fallen soldiers and victims of the First World War.

World War I began in 1914, with the genocide of Assyrians, Armenians, and Greeks starting in 1915. ANZAC Day, commemorating Australian and New Zealand troops’ sacrifices at Gallipoli in 1915, reminds us of the war’s broader impact on communities. Today is a time to honor and remember all who have served, recognizing their bravery and sacrifice.

We also remember Stanley Savige, a Gallipoli veteran who led the operation that saved 50,000 Assyrian refugees in the Middle East. He later founded Legacy, aiding families of service members. Captain Stanley Savige’s remarkable military career earned him the Distinguished Service Order for gallantry. He became Lieutenant General Sir Stanley George Savige, one of Australia’s most decorated soldiers, serving in two world wars.

We also acknowledge the contribution of the Assyrian levies.
