Professor Ian Harris provides some great solutions to the ever-increasing healthcare costs in Australia.

Currently, the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) pays billions every year for medical interventions, many of which (and this is a bit shocking) don't have evidence that they are effective! Professor Harris suggests some of that money is put aside to test the effectiveness of these interventions, and if they aren't effective, remove them from the MBS. It wouldn't take many removals to save millions of dollars!

This is just one of the many great points discussed in episode 20 of the podcast:

The logical trap Surgeons (and everyone) can fall into when falsely attributing patient improvement post-surgery, to the specific effects of the surgery...

"97% of people with tennis elbow will be all better within 12 months... so if you operated on people and you looked at your results at 12 months, you're going to think your operation has a 97% success rate"
- Professor Ian Harris

This is also true of other treatments, from physiotherapy, chiropractic, homeopathy, pharmacology, osteopathy, naturopathy etc etc.

Surgery for pain... what does the evidence say?
Is it all placebo?

www.bodylogic.physio/podcast/trailer

In the final episode of this season (we think we're finishing with a bang!) you'll hear from Orthopaedic surgeon, Professor Ian Harris. He chats to Peter O'Sullivan, Joao Paulo Caneiro and Kevin Wernli Physio about all things, surgery, pain, placebo and research.

They discuss:
• The KEY question patients NEED to ask their healthcare professional.
• The effectiveness (or not) of spinal surgery.
• Why there are such differences in outcomes in workers compensation patients.
• Is pain all in your head?
• Alarming rates of increasing surgery rates in the private sector vs public sector, and why that might be.
• A call for better evidence (and who should fund it!)

A phenomenal episode and one that might create a fair bit of interest!
We hope you enjoy, thanks for your support, and we wish you a merry festive season!
