I’m really looking forward to being part of this event and talking about AI in a way that makes sense for small business.

People are starting from very different places with this stuff. Some are already using it every day. Some have had a bit of a play. Some have opened ChatGPT, stared at the box and thought, “Right. Now what?”

All of those starting points are completely reasonable.

This session is really about helping people understand how the pieces fit together. What can AI actually help with? Where could it save you time? What could it take off your plate? And where is it probably better to leave things alone?

Whether you’re running a trade business, a café, a creative business, a shop, a service business or something else entirely, the useful question isn’t really “How much AI am I using?”

It’s “Where could this genuinely make running my business easier?”

That’s the conversation I’m looking forward to having.

See you soon. Link in bio.

If you’re still doing everything yourself, read this...

I’m a pretty early adopter when it comes to AI, and I’ll admit, I get ridiculously excited when I start talking to other business owners about what it can actually do.

Not the shiny-new-tool stuff. I mean the practical stuff.

• The things you’re doing every week that take far too long.
• The admin you keep repeating.
• The blank page you keep starting from.
• The processes that could be simpler.
• The jobs you’re still doing manually because you’ve never really stopped to ask, “Could AI help me with this?”

Those are the conversations I love having.

Because some of the biggest AI wins in business aren’t complicated at all. Sometimes it’s simply seeing a task differently, changing the way you approach it and suddenly getting back time, money or effort that you were unnecessarily spending.

And that’s exactly what I’m going to be talking about at the next Yarra Valley Business event: AI for busy business owners.

I’ll be sharing practical ways to look at the work already happening in your business and spot where AI could help, along with some of the structures and frameworks I use to make AI genuinely useful rather than just another tool to play with.

My goal is for you to walk away looking at parts of your business and thinking: “Why am I still doing this that way?”

And, even better: “I could change that tomorrow.”

I’m really looking forward to this one.

👀 Ever feel like you're one step behind technology? You're definitely not alone.

Recently I was at a networking event, and the hot topic raised was technology fears - especially around AI and security. One business owner shared their worries about scams and how AI might be a ticking time bomb for their business. 🙈

But here's a thought: it's not the tool, it's how it's used - the person behind its use. Just like how a hammer can build a house or break a window, AI can be harnessed to protect rather than harm. The key is understanding the tool and the intentions behind those using it.

Think of AI as an ally. It's paving the way for amazing medical breakthroughs and can revolutionise your business operations. But how do you tackle the fear? Start by learning. Get to know what AI can do for you and how you can steer it towards positive outcomes for your business.

Feel overwhelmed? Drop a comment with your thoughts. You might discover a new perspective. 🛠️

And if AI feels like one of those things you've been meaning to get your head around, I'm running a practical, no-jargon workshop on exactly this on August 27th. More details coming soon.

Most of the busiest business owners I know also have the most tools: A CRM. A scheduling app. An invoicing system. A project management tool. Social media tools. Video editors. More software you can poke a stick at. And now they're looking at AI.

But the busy hasn't gone anywhere.

Because tools don't fix the friction underneath. They just give it a new location.

AI is exactly the same. If the process is broken, AI speeds up the broken process. It doesn't repair it.

The question worth asking before you add anything new isn't which tool to get. It's what's actually making this harder than it needs to be.

That's the question I'm going to be talking about a lot over the next few weeks.

When clients question cost, it can feel personal.
Often, it isn’t.

As business owners, money conversations can trigger all sorts of stories.
▪️That we’re not being valued.
▪️That our work isn’t understood.
▪️That we need to justify ourselves.

What I’ve learned over time is that these questions are often coming from uncertainty, not disrespect. People are usually trying to understand what they’re committing to and whether they can manage it.

That’s why it helps to be gentle with the person doing the questioning. Money can be stressful, and those conversations can feel hard to bring up on their side too.

When you slow things down and aim for clarity and a genuine win-win, the conversation usually softens.
Not because money stops mattering, but because both people feel heard and in control.

Money conversations don’t need to be awkward.
They just need understanding on both sides. 💛

❓Question for you: What usually triggers the urge to look for a new app or tool for you?

It’s rarely about curiosity or excitement!

More often, it shows up when someone wants:
▪️the feeling of being in control and organised
▪️less manual work
▪️and some relief from having to hold everything in their head

By the time a new system or tool comes up, people are usually hoping it will take work off their plate.

What they’re really asking is:
“How do I make this feel more manageable without me having to constantly stay on top of everything?”

The tricky part is this:  tools don’t reduce effort on their own. They only work when there’s clarity about what they’re meant to support.

➡️ Is it usually clarity or capacity that’s missing when you reach for a new tool?
🫣 Without that clarity, systems don’t simplify the business: they just shift the work somewhere else.

That’s why adding tools too early often increases frustration instead of easing it.

“Am I already behind?”

I did a talk recently with a group of small business owners about what AI can actually be used for in their businesses.

What stood out wasn’t the questions about tools. It was how hungry people were for information.

Not because they all needed to use AI straight away, but because everything suddenly feels like it’s moving faster.

When things start moving faster, it’s easy to compare yourself to everyone else and assume you’ve missed something.

Often, that urgency isn’t a sign you’re late. It’s a sign you’re trying to make decisions without being clear on what actually matters most in your business right now.

As we head into a new year, I am sure you are taking stock of where your time and energy actually goes.

When business owners are stretched thin, I frequently hear the question
“I want ROI from Instagram.”

On the surface, that sounds like a platform question, but most of the time it isn’t.

What people are really asking is:
“Is this where I should be focusing this year?”
“How do I know all this effort is worth it?”
“What deserves my attention when I have so little time and energy?”

Instagram just happens to be where that uncertainty shows up.

When effort feels high and clarity feels low, it’s natural to want a return you can measure.

We want to know if it is all worth it!

Before jumping into tactics, ads or optimisation, there’s a more useful question to ask as you plan the year ahead:

➡️ What role do you actually need this platform to play in your business right now?

Not what it could do.
Not what other people say it should do.
But what you realistically need it to support.

When that’s clear, ROI becomes much easier to assess.
Sometimes it even stops being the main concern.

As you look at the year ahead, if a platform feels heavier and more difficult than it should, it’s often a sign that the decision about its function in your business hasn’t been made yet.

Getting clear will be the best way to spend time to save time.
