A little behind the scenes update 😊

I’m extending my knowledge and continuing further study to become a certified Neuro-Protective Sleep Coach.

This training focuses on neurobiology, nervous system regulation, and attachment science.

I’m so passionate about continuing to learn and grow so I can support families in a way that is in-line with their parenting values and evidence based 🤍

Dummies can be such a great settling tool… until they become a very strong sleep association and start affecting sleep.

I still remember watching my daughter on the monitor during the night after she woke for her dummy. Her hand would be SO close to finding it herself, and I’d sit there hoping she would so I could go back to sleep too 😂

From around 6 months old, we can start teaching babies how to replace their dummy themselves through playtime and when placed in their cot, but this skill is usually more developed closer to 8 months.

Between 3 months and when they learn this skill, you may notice your baby waking more often as the dummy becomes a very strong sleep association. This can happen because around 20 minutes into sleep their jaw relaxes, the dummy falls out, and they wake. Or if they happen to continue to sleep and do a full sleep cycle they will wake after wanting their dummy back in instead of entering the next sleep cycle.

Every baby is different, but understanding why the wakes are happening can really help when deciding what support feels right for your family 🤍

Creating a Nursery That Feels Calm for you 🤍

Your baby feels you.

The way you feel in the nursery can influence the whole mood of sleep time, feeds, cuddles, and settling.

A nursery doesn’t need to be perfect or Pinterest-worthy — but creating a space that makes you feel calm, happy, and comfortable can help make those days and nights feel softer and more relaxing.

When you feel more relaxed:

• your body language softens
• your voice becomes calmer
• the environment feels more peaceful
• and babies often respond to that calm energy too

A few simple ways to create a calming nursery:

• soft lighting instead of bright overhead lights
• calming colours that make you feel good (this is different for each person)
• a comfortable feeding chair
• gentle textures and cosy layers
• reducing clutter
• adding meaningful touches that make you smile

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s creating a space that feels safe, calm, and comforting for your whole family 🤍

At Sleep Habits Gippsland, I love combining sleep support with nursery and bedroom design to help create spaces that feel both functional and calming for little ones and their parents.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS ENDING (Sunday 3am) can bring early mornings, but don’t panic—stick to your routine, use light to your advantage, and adjust slowly. Most little ones settle within a few days. ✨

Here are some simple tips to help:

Shift slowly - Move bedtime and naps later by 10–15 minutes each day (if you can)

Use light to your advantage - Get outside in the afternoon/evening to help push bedtime later

Keep your routine consistent - Same wind-down, same steps—this gives your child security even if timing feels off

Watch for over-tiredness - Your child may get tired earlier—don’t be afraid of a slightly earlier bedtime for a few nights

Expect early mornings (temporarily) - If they wake early, keep the room dark and treat it as nighttime

Give it time - Most children adjust within 3–5 days
