Exploring Koorie Pathways and Culture with GLaWAC - A group of Aboriginal students from Sale College’s Macalister Campus recently travelled to Kalimna to visit the offices of the [Gippsland Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC)].

The visit provided students with a valuable opportunity to explore Koorie pathways, culture and future career possibilities in a welcoming and informal environment.

During the visit, students were able to meet and talk with Aboriginal people working across a diverse range of roles connected to land and water management, conservation, caring for Country and project development throughout the Gippsland region. These conversations gave students an opportunity to hear firsthand about different career pathways and the many ways Aboriginal knowledge, culture and connection to Country are reflected in contemporary workplaces.

Importantly, the experience allowed our students to see Aboriginal people working, leading and contributing across a range of professional roles within their own region. For young people considering their future pathways, being able to connect with Aboriginal role models and learn about opportunities available close to home can be incredibly valuable.

The small-group format created a relaxed environment where students could ask questions, share conversations and learn more about the work being undertaken across Gippsland.

The visit was also a wonderful opportunity to strengthen connections between Sale College, community and Aboriginal organisations, while supporting our students to explore their aspirations, cultural identity and connection to Country.

We sincerely thank the team at GLaWAC for welcoming our students, sharing their knowledge and experiences, and taking the time to introduce them to the diverse opportunities and pathways available within the organisation and across the broader Gippsland community.

Sale College is proud to have been an active member of the inaugural TeachMeet Gippsland last week.

TeachMeet had participation from 14 schools throughout the region and was well attended. The opportunity to collaborate, share expertise and widen professional networks is invaluable. All schools in the region are stronger when we work together.

Our Principal, Andrew Stock, presented to a healthy crowd of teachers, education support staff and leaders about evidence-based behaviour management strategies that work.

Find out what Andrew had to say about TeachMeet by watching this WIN News bulletin.

Great things are happening at Sale College and, indeed, across our region!

1. What attracted you to Sale College, and what are you most looking forward to?
Sale College is like returning to familiar place, I have taught and worked as an Education support in my early years as an educator.

2. Tell us a little about yourself, including your teaching background, interests or hobbies.
I have been in and out of teaching for over two decades, I have worked as a Paramedic and most recently been running school camps. I love spending time with family, my happy place is in the Australian bush, on a beach or river.

3. What is one thing you hope students remember about being in your classroom?
That every student is valued and has the opportunity for growth.

We're delighted to have him as part of Sale College’s pursuit to become the school of choice for even more families. Please join us in giving him a warm welcome.

Please join us in welcoming Rebekah McIvor to the Sale College team! We're excited to introduce her to our school community.

“I have lived in the area for 20 plus years now and have worked with young people across both Primary and Secondary schools. Our young people are our future leaders and I knew I wanted to support and work alongside those who really care about the wellbeing and success of the students. Sale College shares that goal so it has been a pleasure to work alongside the staff here.

Outside of school I love singing, participating in my local church community, all things creative, spending quality time with family and friends and mentoring young people.

My role in the classroom is to help students overcome barriers to their learning so they can achieve their best but even more than that I hope that every day I spend in the classroom I am helping students think bigger than themselves and to help them discover that they are capable of achieving their goals and dreams. I hope they go away feeling a little more confident and even excited for their future a bit more each day.”
