How do you build resilience?
Resilience is the ability to bounce back or even better, to bounce forward, in the face of obstacles and challenges.
The last 18 months have highlighted for us the need to build resilience. Without it, we ‘crumple’ becoming more anxious, less productive and more stressed. We procrastinate and become short or abrupt with people.
With resilience we develop a forward-focused, determined mindset that enables us to find the strength to carry on, to lift our performance with grit rather than complaint.
And this strength to ‘get up and go again’ has a positive impact not only on our own productivity and emotional well being but also on the productivity and well being of those around us.
When you stay close to positive, productive people you become more positive and productive yourself.
So how exactly do you build resilience in yourself?
Recent research by the internationally recognised strength expert, Marcus Buckingham, showed there are three vital ways to build your resilience:
1. Focus on what you can control
In a crisis, you can't control the environment, and outcomes are much more difficult to predict. However, you can control the habits or rituals that you build into both the personal and professional aspects of your life. Doing so gives a sense of control and a structure in which to take action.
2. Compartmentalise
Think of your role as a series of ‘swimming lanes’. If this swimming lane has a crisis or current concern can you continue to make a contribution to other swimming lanes? Focus on those lanes where you can make a contribution because contribution leads to a boost in energy and invigoration.
3. Gold threads
Gold threads are the parts of your work that you love. It turns out that if you spend just 20% of your day on work that you love your resilience increases significantly.
Give your resilience a boost today by asking yourself the following questions:
- What parts of your work do you love, what are your gold threads?
- Which ‘swimming lanes’ can you contribute to right now?
- What are the rituals or habits you have that set you up for success?
I'd love to know which of these you found most useful?
