"Treat skills like an iceberg" ❄️

What appears in a student's writing is just the tip—beneath lurks a complex world of skills that make or break success.

Great teachers must identify which underlying abilities need attention. Is it struggling with ideas? Sentence structure? Organisation?

With thousands of skills to track across dozens of students, this diagnostic detective work is overwhelming.

That's why we're automating it at Mark My Words—helping you quickly spot what's happening below the surface, so that you can spend time with the student making the intervention.

"Writing is like a rope" - Joan Sedita's powerful metaphor shows us that great writing comes from developing multiple skills together.

When these skills strengthen simultaneously, students become more confident writers. This framework transforms how we see writing instruction - not as one monolithic skill, but as an intricate weaving of abilities.

At Mark My Words, we're inspired by this comprehensive view that makes writing development visible and manageable.

Writing is complex. A single sentence can showcase multiple skills - or areas for improvement.

Consider topic sentences:
- Do they connect to the prompt?
- Introduce the paragraph's main idea?
- Transition from the previous paragraph?

Each aspect matters. But tracking them all for every student? Challenging.

Mark My Words allows you to automatically monitor these specific skills individually. You'll see exactly where each student stands on any skill that you define.

This granular approach means:
- Precise, actionable feedback
- Recognition of small improvements
- Clear patterns across your class, cohort, or even school
- Targeted teaching interventions

It's not about more work. It's about deeper insights leading to more impactful interventions and better outcomes.

Writing frameworks are as unique as the schools that use them. TEEL, PEEL, SEAL, your own custom approach - or no formal framework at all. Each serves a purpose in your context.

Here's the thing: Mark My Words doesn't require you to change a thing about your practices. Instead, it adapts to you.

Using TEEL? We'll use TEEL. Got a bespoke 7-part paragraph structure? We're on board. No specific framework? That's fine too - we'll work with your preferred approach.

Our tool molds itself to your existing method:
- It speaks your language - no need to 'translate' your terms
- Your rubrics stay exactly as they are
- Your marking criteria remain unchanged

The benefit?
- Zero disruption to your current teaching and assessment methods
- No confusing transition period for students or staff
- Consistent feedback that aligns with what you're already doing

Mark My Words simply adds a layer of efficiency and insight to your existing practices.

Tracking writing across the whole school: a noble goal that rarely becomes reality.

Why? Because it's incredibly complex.

One Head of Faculty we spoke to tried setting up an elaborate system of Google Sheets to track writing skills across subjects. This took a full term to set up but produced a tangled mess of data and only 30% teacher engagement.

It's not for lack of trying. But let's face it:
- Teachers are already overworked
- Every subject has its own priorities
- Existing systems aren't built for cross-subject skill tracking

Mark My Words tackles this seemingly impossible task.

We're not asking teachers to input extra data or learn new systems. Instead, we seamlessly integrate with existing marking processes to build a writing profile for each student.

Mark My Words does not add to your workload. It simply makes visible the writing journey that's already happening across your school.

Annotating student work is valuable but time-intensive.

Mark My Words does more than just tag on generic comments. It:
- Generates contextual annotations automatically
- References specific parts of the student's writing
- Adapts to each unique piece of work

Mark My Words works for both typed and handwritten responses.

You can then build on these annotations, adding your years of professional expertise and insight.

Our aim is to give you a head start on providing specific, relevant feedback for every student.

Hey teachers,

You know that feeling when you're knee-deep in essays and suddenly think, "Wait, did I mark that last one too harshly?" Or when you realise your marking style is worlds apart from the teacher you're working with?

It's like trying to hit a moving target sometimes.

That's why we've built Mark My Words.

Mark My Words helps you:
- Stay consistent (even when your coffee runs out)
- Get on the same page as your fellow teachers
- Make sure every kid gets a fair go
