This is the part of the AI conversation that matters most.

The problem isn’t that students are lazy.
It’s that AI makes it incredibly easy to avoid discomfort and learning has always involved a bit of struggle.

When students use AI to write essays for them, they skip the thinking, the trial and error, and the skill-building that actually creates growth.

AI is a tool but like any powerful tool, it needs guidance. Used well, it can support learning, deepen understanding, and speed up feedback. Used poorly, it removes the very challenge that helps students develop resilience and capability.

The solution isn’t banning AI.
It’s teaching students how to use it without bypassing the learning process.

I laughed at this but there’s actually a serious point behind the joke.

If you use AI to avoid thinking, avoid learning, and avoid building skills…
then yes you’re training yourself to be replaceable.

But if you use AI to challenge your ideas, refine your work, and learn faster?
That’s building an advantage.

AI isn’t the enemy.
Avoiding skill development is.

The future won’t reward people who let tools do the thinking for them.
It will reward people who know how to think better because of the tools they use.

In 1987, changing to a 4-term school year and removing corporal punishment felt like a massive shift.

At the time, it probably felt disruptive. Controversial. Too fast.

But today? It’s just… normal.

Education has always evolved. From chalkboards to computers. From overhead projectors to smartboards. From textbooks to online platforms.

AI isn’t the first big change it’s just the next one.

The question isn’t whether education will change.
It’s whether we choose to guide that change thoughtfully or resist it until we’re forced to catch up.

Aussie teachers are among the most stressed in the world and it’s rarely because of teaching itself.

It’s the admin. The reporting. The compliance. The constant red tape.

If AI and technology can take over the repetitive paperwork, data entry, and documentation that’s not replacing teachers. That’s protecting them.

Teaching should be about delivery, connection, mentoring, and helping kids think.
Not drowning in forms.

The real opportunity isn’t AI replacing educators. It’s AI giving educators their time back.

The challenge? Education systems move slowly and technology moves fast.

The sooner we use smart tools to support teachers properly, the better outcomes our kids will see.

The teacher shortage in Australia is real.
So real that we’re now recruiting teachers from overseas just to meet demand.

Technology will absolutely support education but there are roles where humans will always matter.

Teaching isn’t just about delivering content. It’s about trust, relationships, encouragement, and knowing when a child needs support, confidence, or challenge.

Right now, teachers still build stronger relationships with children than AI or robots ever could. And in roles where care, connection, and social development matter, people will always have a place.

The future of education isn’t humans or technology it’s humans supported by the right tools. When we get that balance right, kids benefit the most.

If 40% of maths teachers aren’t fully equipped to teach maths, then the real question isn’t blame it’s responsibility.

How do we make sure kids still get the skills they need for the future?

The world our kids are entering will demand more than memorising formulas. It will require problem-solving, logical thinking, adaptability, and the ability to work with technology that didn’t exist a few years ago.

Education can’t rely on one system or one approach anymore. Kids need multiple ways to learn through hands-on problem solving, technology, experimentation, and guided thinking.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s giving kids the tools to think, learn, and keep learning no matter how fast the world changes.

This is a fair question and students are right to ask it.

Using ChatGPT isn’t automatically cheating.
The issue is how it’s being used.

If AI replaces thinking, learning, and effort that’s a problem.
If AI supports understanding, improves clarity, or helps students learn faster that’s a skill.

The real gap right now isn’t student behaviour it’s that education systems are still catching up to how fast technology is changing.

AI will be part of university, the workplace, and everyday life. The long-term advantage won’t be banning it it’ll be teaching students how to use it ethically, intelligently, and responsibly.

That’s the difference between shortcuts and skills.
