COLIC WEEK π΄ Let's talk about the emergency that keeps horse owners up at night.
Did you know that colic is the #1 killer of horses? And that most colic episodes happen between 6pm and 6am β exactly when your vet is hardest to reach?
This week, we're diving deep into everything you need to know about colic: what it is, how to recognise it, what to do while waiting for the vet, and what NOT to do.
Let's start with a question: If your horse started showing signs of colic RIGHT NOW, would you know what to check?
Here's your colic action plan:
1οΈβ£ CHECK vital signs β heart rate, CRT, gut sounds
2οΈβ£ CALL your vet β give them the numbers
3οΈβ£ REMOVE food β but NOT water
4οΈβ£ WALK gently if the horse is comfortable (don't force it)
5οΈβ£ MONITOR and note any changes every 15 minutes
6οΈβ£ DO NOT give medication without vet advice
