Supervisors play an important role in helping clinicians develop confidence and competence in su***de risk assessment - whether they’re supporting an early-career psychologist or an experienced practitioner.

✨ On 16 October, join Dr Jacinta Hawgood for an online STAP masterclass focused on the challenges supervisors can encounter when supporting supervisees with su***de risk assessment, and the supervisor competencies that are most relevant in this area.

✨ Dr Jacinta Hawgood is a recognised national and international expert in suicidology, with more than two decades of clinical, research and teaching experience in su***de prevention, assessment and supervision.

✨ This masterclass is an opportunity to strengthen your understanding of su***de risk assessment from a supervision perspective, and to take away practical insights you can apply in your own supervisory work.

✨ Daylight saving has started on 4 October in some Australian states, which means event times may look a little different depending on where you’re joining from:

- New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, ACT: 1 hour ahead of Queensland.
- South Australia: 30 minutes ahead of Queensland.
- Western Australia & Northern Territory: Same time as or aligned with Queensland (no daylight saving).

STAP is based in Brisbane, where the time does not change.

STAP's training pathway brings together knowledge, practical skills and demonstrated competence.

Here's how it works:
✨ PART 1: Knowledge Assessment. Build the knowledge foundation for effective supervision through self-paced online learning.
✨ PART 2: Skills Training. Put that knowledge into practice through a two-day workshop focused on developing the skills needed for effective supervision and a strong supervisory alliance.
✨ PART 3: Competency-based Assessment & Evaluation. Demonstrate your supervisory skills through a recorded supervision session and reflective self-evaluation, with assessment and feedback from experienced evaluators.

⭐ Over the weekend, our Lead Trainer Dr Aaron Frost was in Nipaluna, Hobart at the Australian Psychological Society (APS) College of Clinical Psychologists Conference, presenting across two topics that anyone who knows Aaron will recognise as particular passion areas of his.

✨ On Day 1, Aaron presented From Knowledge to Mastery: Deliberate Practice for Supervisors and Supervisees.

Drawing on his own clinical practice and experience supervising hundreds of psychologists, Aaron explored how deliberate practice can be brought into the supervision room to help psychologists actively build and refine their clinical skills, not simply accumulate experience. With plenty of hands-on role plays, practice and discussion, it was a highly interactive afternoon.

🔹 STAP is holding its first-ever Supervision Conference in April 2027!

After 21 years of STAP, and many conversations with supervisors wanting opportunities to connect, learn and continue developing their supervisory practice, we’re very excited to bring everyone together next year.

✨ Then on final Day 3, Aaron delivered a keynote data privacy in the age of pervasive AI. If you know Aaron, you’ll know data privacy, technology and AI are something of a “Roman Empire” topic for him.

✨ When STAP was first conceived more than two decades ago, its founders set out to change the way psychologists were trained to supervise. The result was a rigorous, evidence-informed approach designed specifically for Australian clinicians.

✨ Since then, STAP has grown from a Queensland-based program into a national supervisor training and approval program, with thousands of psychologists trained across Australia.

✨ As professional standards and the evidence base continue to evolve, supervisor training needs to evolve with them, which is why over the past two years, we've been rebuilding the core knowledge foundation of STAP, creating a more contemporary, engaging and practical learning experience for today's supervisors.

STAP comprises three parts, and all three are now available to explore on our new website.

✨ Part 1: Knowledge Assessment is a series of self-paced online modules and is the newest addition to our updated STAP offering.

✨ Developed through the combined expertise of
- STAP Director & Program Lead Dr Aaron Frost,
- Program Manager & Clinical Psychologist Cherie Dalton,
- Subject Expert Mary Goslett,
- Instructional Designer Juliet Buchanan, and
- Graphic Designer Stella Lippa,

the new Part 1 brings together extensive professional expertise, high-quality educational design and engaging, contemporary content.

✨ The result is a learning experience designed to help supervisors build and refresh the knowledge, skills and reflective foundations that support high-quality supervision.
