Australia is racing across the planet and nobody can feel it. 🌏 The continent sits on the Indo Australian tectonic plate, which drifts north about seven centimeters every year. That makes it the fastest moving continent on Earth, nearly five times quicker than the global average of one and a half centimeters tracked by NOAA. This slow but steady push comes from deep mantle convection and pressure from the Indian Ocean Ridge beneath the sea. 🧭
The movement is invisible in daily life but powerful enough to break modern GPS systems. In 2016 Australia's coordinates were already off by more than a meter, forcing a nationwide shift of 1.8 meters in 2017.
