May is the perfect time to move your Coelogyne’s (like Coelogyne cristata) into a sunnier spot. The late Autumn sun will do its magic and promote new growth and flower spikes ready for spring.

Why grow Epidendrum (crucifix) orchids? Because they last in flower for a REALLY long time. This stem has been flowering since March 2025!

Stages of orchid pollination.

The pollinators have been busy in our greenhouse this past month. We have lots of seed pods on our Epidendrum orchids.
Once pollen from one flower sticks in another, pollination produces seeds in the flowers o***y which develops into a seed pod.
The first picture shows different stages of seed pod development from just pollinated all the way through to developed.
Unlike other plants, seeds cannot just be harvested and planted to make new orchids - they need special nutrients and fungi in nature to grow. This is mimicked in clinical labs, where orchids are grown on nutrient rich agar in a sterile environment. From the time they are placed on agar, to seedling development, to de-flasking and growing a mature/flowering plant; orchids can take upwards of 4-15 years to produce their first flowers.

Growing orchids is not just a hobby, it’s a practice in patience - producing a lifetime of joy when those flowers finally bloom.
