📢 Important Update for 485 and Tourist Visa Holders 📢

The Australian Government has announced significant changes impacting Temporary Graduate Visa (485) and Visitor Visa (600) holders. Starting July 1st, 2024, onshore extensions for student visas from these visa categories will no longer be possible.

Key Points:

1. Temporary Graduate Visa Holders: According to the recent “Graduates in Limbo” report by the Grattan Institute, 32% of Temporary Graduate Visa holders were found to return to study when their visa expires. This new change mandates that graduates should seek skilled jobs and aim for permanent residency or depart the country, avoiding a state of being ‘permanently temporary’.
2. Visitor Visa Holders: The pathway from Visitor Visa (600) to Student Visa will be closed, affecting over 36,000 applications since July 1st, 2023. This measure aims to reinforce offshore student visa integrity.
3. Other Changes: The reforms include shorter post-study work rights, reduced age limits from 50 to 35 years for visa eligibility, and increased English language requirements as of March 2024.

Minister for Home Affairs and Cyber Security Clare O’Neil emphasized the need for a smaller, better-planned migration system that closes loopholes and focuses on delivering the skills Australia needs without exploitation.

📈 Financial Capacity Requirement for Student and Student Guardian visas will see an increase.‼️

📝Starting May 10, 2024, the required funds for eligibility for Student and Student Guardian visas will be raised.

▶️ AUD 29,710 for students
▶️ AUD 10,394 for spouse
▶️ AUD 4,449 for child
▶️ AUD 13,502 for annual school costs
▶️ AUD 87,856 Personal Annual Income if there is no member of the family
▶️ AUD 87,856 Personal Annual Income where there is a member of the family

📂 The financial capacity requirement has been revised to correlate with 75 percent of the national minimum wage. This adjustment aims to reflect a more accurate assessment of the funds necessary to sustain a basic standard of living during studies in Australia. This proportion accounts for students being out of course session for 25 percent of the year, during which they might either return home or have unrestricted work opportunities.

📂 Applications submitted before May 10, 2024, will be evaluated based on the financial capacity requirements that were in place at the time of submission.

Are you an international student who has recently graduated? If you are looking to apply for a Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485), please note that some of the requirements are changing. If you apply for a subclass 485 visa in the Graduate Work stream from 1 July 2023, you will need to show:

🎓 You have a qualification relevant to an occupation on the skilled occupation list, and

📥 You have applied for a skills assessment in your nominated occupation on the skilled occupation list.
