Author Visit – Andrew McDonald
Today, our Year 3 and 4 students were lucky enough to enjoy a special writing session with Andrew McDonald, author of the Real Pigeonsseries. Students were highly engaged as Andrew shared stories about his childhood as a writer at school, showed some of his very first pieces of writing, and spoke about his journey to becoming a children’s author.
Andrew also worked with students on how to create and develop story ideas, inspiring them to think creatively about their own writing. We thank Andrew for being so generous with his time, and Melton City Libraries for providing this wonderful opportunity.

An update from Mr Lombardi:
Today I share some personal news with a deep sense of pride and gratitude. I have been officially appointed as a Senior Education Improvement Leader for the Brimbank/Melton Area.
Burnside Primary School will always hold a very special place in my heart. As the founding principal, it was a privilege to work alongside an incredible community to build a school grounded in high expectations, strong relationships, and a deep commitment to every child’s success.
To our staff, your professionalism, care and relentless focus on improvement created the culture that makes Burnside such a strong and thriving school.
To our families, particularly those who were there from the very beginning, thank you for the trust you placed in us as a new school community. Your belief in what we were building, and your willingness to take that journey with us from day one, has been foundational to the success of Burnside Primary School.
I also want to acknowledge the teachers who were appointed in those foundation years. You set the tone from the very beginning, often going above and beyond to establish a culture of high expectations and high performance. Your commitment, energy and belief in what we were building laid the foundation for the strong teaching and learning culture that continues to thrive today.
I want to acknowledge Kasey Simpson, our foundation Assistant Principal, who played an important role in establishing the strong foundations of the school in those early years.
There are not enough words to recognise the contribution of Jan Thom, our Business Manager. Jan has been the backbone of the school in so many ways, steady, solutions-focused and deeply committed to making things work for our students, staff and families. Her leadership of the administration team, including Blaine and Rita, has been exceptional, ensuring the school has always operated with care, precision and professionalism. The strength and success of Burnside is, in no small part, due to her tireless work and unwavering dedication. I can’t thank you all enough.
I would also like to acknowledge our School Council and the important governance role they have played over time. In particular, I thank our Council Presidents, Shara and Julian, for their leadership, support and commitment to the school. Their partnership and stewardship have been integral to the growth and success of Burnside Primary School.
I also want to acknowledge the executive teams I have had the privilege to work alongside, particularly in the foundation years with Katy, Jan, Michael, Lana and Evonne. Their commitment, leadership and shared belief in what we were building set the tone for the school and helped establish the strong culture that continues today.
A very special and heartfelt acknowledgement to Katy Lawley, who was appointed as Assistant Principal just prior to COVID and stepped into leadership at a time of enormous complexity. Katy has been instrumental in taking Burnside to its next phase. Her unwavering work ethic, deep relational approach and commitment to getting the work right , every day, have shaped a culture of strong professionalism and collective responsibility across the school.
Katy is an outstanding instructional leader, with a relentless focus on improving teaching and learning. She has been pivotal in driving the consistent, high-quality practice that underpins the outstanding student outcomes the school is achieving today. Her leadership is grounded in clarity, care and high expectations, and her impact is evident in both the growth of staff and the success of every learner.
What we created together was never about one person, but about a collective commitment to something bigger than ourselves. I am incredibly proud of what Burnside has become and excited about what lies ahead for the school.
While my role has evolved, my connection to this community remains strong. I will always be a proud foundation principal of Burnside Primary School.
Thank you for being such an important part of my journey.
